We often hear the word “gospel.” But what exactly is the gospel?
The gospel is not a simple religious message. The gospel is a revolution. It is the story of the old heaven and the old earth passing away, and an entirely new world breaking open.
The Order the World Proclaims vs. The Order the Gospel Proclaims
The world we have lived in has operated by one logic:
The strong dominate. The powerful rise to the top. Force moves the world.
Throughout history, it has always been this way. Those with more, those who are stronger, those in higher positions have led the world. We have come to accept this as natural.
But the gospel directly overturns this order.
Jesus Christ — The One Who Lived the Gospel in the Flesh
The gospel is not an abstract ideology. Jesus Christ demonstrated this gospel through the entirety of His own life.
The King of heaven was born in a manger — not at the center of power, but in the lowest of places. He personally washed His disciples’ feet and sat at the table with sinners, tax collectors, and outcasts. He went first to those whom society looked down upon — the lowest and most marginalized.
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.” (Matthew 20:26-27)
And finally, His life reached its climax on the cross. By the world’s logic, it was the most shameful and powerless of deaths. Yet by the logic of the gospel, it was the greatest act of service, the most powerful act of love. The ultimate descent into lowliness leading to the glory of resurrection — this is the world of the gospel that Jesus Christ proved with His whole being.
The New World the Gospel Proclaims
The world the gospel teaches us looks like this:
- The high are brought low
- The low are lifted high
- Those who serve become the masters
This is not a moral lesson. It is a complete transformation of worldview itself. The very standard of value is turned upside down. That is why the gospel is a revolution — not a revolution of violence, but a revolution in which the very way of existing is changed.
When We Live According to This
Knowing the gospel in our heads is different from living by the gospel.
When we walk the path that Jesus walked — the path of humility, service, and sacrifice — the same work of the gospel unfolds in our own lives. Peace comes to those who live by the principles of this gospel. When we step free from the logic of competition and domination, a life of dwelling in the grace of God begins.
A life where service becomes strength rather than weakness, and humility becomes a new beginning rather than defeat — that is the place to which the gospel invites us.
The gospel is not a story from a distant place. The story that Jesus Christ lived out in His own body is already alive and breathing — in the way I treat someone today, in which place I choose to stand.
In your life, the revolution of the gospel can already begin.
