Charles Spurgeon

Charles Spurgeon

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was an English Baptist pastor and writer. He still remains influential among Christians and still known as the "Prince of Preachers."

He was converted to Christ at the age of 16 and immediately began preaching. He preached in the streets and in the fields before he was 21. In his first church, he began with 100 members. It grew until he was preaching to 10,000 people in the Surrey Music Hall. His church, the Metropolitan Tabernacle, seated 6,000 people. He withdrew from every movement among English Baptists which tended to criticize the Authorized Version 1611 in any way.

Before his death, he published more than 2,000 sermons and 49 volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations, and devotions.

And the gospel won’t be hurt even though you reject it and set yourself in opposition to it.

73:25  Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. 73:26  My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

Now it’s ancient history, and in a few more years when the great trumpet sounds, all those men who tried to throw him over the edge of the hill will have to look at him and see him seated where they can’t grab him, abuse him, or cast him down. What a sight it will be for them!

Be careful before you carelessly discard any precept of the Lord. Every word he has spoken to you is more precious than a diamond. Prize it. Store it up. Wear it. Let it be your ornament and your beauty.

Whole Psalm. Psalm 130 is a Song of Forgiveness; Psalm 131 is a Song of Humility: the former celebrates the blessedness of the man whose transgressions are pardoned, the latter celebrates the blessedness of the man who is of a meek and lowly spirit. Forgiveness should humble us. Forgiveness implies sin; and should not the sinner clothe himself with humility? and when not for any desert of his, but simply by the free grace of Heaven, his sins have been pardoned, should he not bind the garments of humility still more closely about him? The man who is of a nature at once sincere and sweet, will be even more humbled by the sense of an undeserved forgiveness than by the memory of the sins from which it has cleansed him. Very fitly, therefore, does the Psalm of humility follow the Psalm which sings of the Divine loving kindness and tender mercy.

Remember, we sin every moment that we delay to do something commanded by Christ.

Dios tiene que ser el único objeto de adoración, el único recurso de nuestra alma en los tiempos de necesidad.

If there’s anything in the Bible that disagrees with you, you are wrong. You need to come to terms with it right away, and the only terms will be obey, obey, obey your Lord’s will.

La oración sin fervor es como ir de caza con un perro muerto, y la oración sin preparación es cazar con un halcón ciego.

When the thunderbolts are launched, he who was once the Lamb so full of mercy will take his position as the Lion of the tribe of Judah, full of majesty. That thunderbolt will punctuate the fact that you rejected Christ. You heard him but turned a deaf ear to him. You neglected perfect salvation and refused God’s gift of grace.

If you trust Christ for yourself, then serve him for yourself. And by his mighty grace, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

O my Lord Jesus, answer no desire of mine if it be not according to thy judgment; and if in aught that I have asked I have failed to seek for what I want, amend my pleading, for thou art infinitely wiser than I.

Little-Faith is just as certain to get to heaven as Great-Faith. When Jesus Christ counts up his Jewels at the last day, he will have little pearls as well as great ones. A diamond is precious no matter how small it is, because it is a diamond. And faith, no matter how small it is, if it is true faith, has a place in Christ’s crown. Little-Faith is always certain of heaven, because the name of Little-Faith is written in the book of eternal life. Little Faith was chosen by God before the creation of the world. Little-Faith was bought with the blood of Christ and he cost just as much as Great-Faith.

Do not expect that you will have no sorrows because you are a king. “It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink.” The words of this king in the Book of Proverbs are often proven true. It is not for kings to drink the wine of pleasure. It is not for kings to have much of the intoxicating drink and enjoy the excesses that delight the world. They will have joy enough up yonder, when they “drink it new” with Jesus in their “Father’s kingdom.” Poor saint. Do not dwell on this life on earth, but think about your future. You are a king! I appeal to you, never forget that. In the midst of your tribulation, rejoice in it.

THE story of Mr. Knill’s prophesying that I should preach the gospel in Rowland Hill’s Chapel, and to the largest congregations in the world, has been regarded by many as a legend, but it was strictly true.

The apostle Paul peremptorily, over and over again, tells us that salvation is not by works; nay, he tells us that it is not by works and grace put together; he testifies that the two principles neutralise and kill each other, and that a man must either be saved wholly as the result of God’s favor, or else he must be saved altogether as the result of his own merit, for the two principles cannot in any way be combined.
