Charles Spurgeon

Charles Spurgeon

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was an English Baptist pastor and writer. He still remains influential among Christians and still known as the "Prince of Preachers."

He was converted to Christ at the age of 16 and immediately began preaching. He preached in the streets and in the fields before he was 21. In his first church, he began with 100 members. It grew until he was preaching to 10,000 people in the Surrey Music Hall. His church, the Metropolitan Tabernacle, seated 6,000 people. He withdrew from every movement among English Baptists which tended to criticize the Authorized Version 1611 in any way.

Before his death, he published more than 2,000 sermons and 49 volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations, and devotions.

Those who were really orthodox in their sentiments were too often lax and unfaithful as to the introduction of heretical ministers into their pulpits, either as assistants or occasional preachers. In this way the Arian and Socinian heresies were introduced

There is never a worse sin in the world than that which a man covers over with the cloak of religion; let us ever beware of falling into this evil.

If there were no hereafter, I would still prefer to be a Christian, and the humblest Christian minister, to being a king or an emperor, for I am persuaded there are more delights in Christ, yea, more joy in one glimpse of His face than is to be found in all the praises of this harlot- world,

The ten commandments were those black horses, and the justice of God, like a plowshare, tore my spirit. I was condemned, undone, destroyed, — lost, helpless, hopeless, — I thought hell was before me.

Neither in the Church militant nor in the host triumphant is there one who received a new heart, and was reclaimed from sin without a wound from Jesus. The pain may have been but slight, and the healing may have been speedy; but in each case there has been a real bruise, which required a Heavenly Physician to heal.

My Father, Thou hast denied me this outward and seeming good, now enrich me with Thy love. Give me the gold of Thy favor, bless me indeed. Then, allot to others whatever Thou wilt, Thou shalt divide my portion, my soul shall wait Thy daily will. Do Thou bless me indeed, and I shall be content.

But here, as of riches, it is indisputable that the greatest fame does not bring with it any equal measure of gratification.

Tú puedes volverte tan grande como quieras cuando te alejas de Dios; pero cuando te acercas al Señor, puedes cantar correctamente: “Entre más tus glorias deslumbren mis ojos, En un lugar más humilde me tenderé”.

Patience is the fair handmaid and daughter of faith; we cheerfully wait when we are certain that we shall not wait in vain. It is our duty and our privilege to wait upon the Lord in service, in worship, in expectancy, in trust all the days of our life. Our faith will be tried faith, and if it be of the true kind, it will bear continued trial without yielding.

The necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart may be clearly seen from this fact, that all which has been done by God the Father and by God the Son will be ineffectual to us unless the Spirit reveals these things to our souls.

There is nothing Christ dislikes more than for His people to make a showthing of Him, and not to use Him. He loves to be employed by us.
