Charles Stanley

Dr. Charles F. Stanley is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Atlanta, founder of In Touch Ministries, and a New York Times best-selling author who has written more than fifty books, and has sold more than nine million copies. He demonstrates a keen awareness of people's needs and provides Christ-centered, biblically-based principles for everyday life.

Charles Frazier Stanley was born September 25, 1932, in the small town of Dry Fork, Virginia. The only child of Charley and Rebecca Stanley, Charles came into the world during a time when the entire nation felt the grip of the Great Depression. To make matters worse, just nine months later, his father Charley died at the young age of 29.

However, Charles refused to let the Great Depression or the difficulties of his life define him. Instead, like his father and grandfather before him, he clung to God’s Word and took up the mantle to preach the gospel to whoever would listen.

Dr. Stanley’s motivation is best represented by the truth found in Acts 20:24, “Life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about God's mighty kindness and love.” This is because, as he says, “It is the Word of God and the work of God that changes people’s lives.”

Dr. Stanley’s teachings can be heard weekly at First Baptist Church Atlanta, daily on “In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley” radio and television broadcasts on more than 2,800 stations around the world, on the Internet at intouch.org, through the In Touch Messenger, and in the monthly, award-winning In Touch magazine.

Friend, you’re in a spiritual battle, and your enemy is trying to undermine your faith and impede your progress. Satan cannot destroy your soul, but he can demolish your effectiveness. And he does so by building strongholds in your life that influence your thoughts and actions—ultimately enslaving you to sin. Thus he renders you ineffective for the kingdom of God. Don’t fall for his trap.

You should forgive too. There is no telling what God wants to do through you or through the person who hurt you. The one thing you do know is that as long as you harbor unforgiveness, you’re not going to be free. So don’t be afraid to let God handle the situation. His plan of justice for your offender may surprise you.

Friend, it is sheer pride that keeps you relying on yourself rather than depending on and obeying Your heavenly Father, who wants to be your strength, your life, and your all. Stop trying to figure everything out. Kneel before Him and leave all that concerns you in His hands. He will not fail you.

However, since Scripture teaches that all believers, young and old, should clearly be able to discern the voice of God, it’s important for you to stop talking at times and just listen to Him. Grow still and quiet. Open His Word and learn to identify how He speaks. You will, eventually, recognize His voice and know exactly what to do.

Father, please reveal areas where Scripture hasn’t taken root. Make Your Word the foundation of my life so that I may glorify Your name, amen.

the Father is not surprised or repulsed by your profound wounds, fears, and failings. He knows all about them, and His response is to pursue you and heal you fully. This is why He sent Jesus to save you (Romans 5:8).

Friend, the Lord is intensely concerned for you and He wants you to know with certainty that He is closer to you than the very breath you breathe. Though you may feel lonely at times, you are never actually alone. Jesus is one Friend you will always have—who will be with you always—because He is “the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

Friend, personal meditation isn’t difficult. It begins when you simply get alone with the Lord and sit quietly before Him. So don’t wait any longer. Focus on the Father. Listen to His voice, be filled with His peace, and find His direction and purpose for your life.

You see, fears will arise that prevent you from doing as He asks—proclaiming the gospel, reaching out to those in need, and submitting to His will. But the fear of the Lord—your respect for Him—should motivate you to obey Him anyway.
