“مِنْ حُسنِ الحظ، على الأقل، أنَّ الإنسانَ لا يتألمُ مدةً طويلةً حينَ يُقْطَعُ رأسه. هذهِ الملاحظة التي ذكرتها أنتَ الآن تَخطرُ ببالِ كلَّ إنسان. ولتحقيقِ هذهِ الغاية إنما اخترعوا تلكَ الآلة، أعني المِقْصَلة. أما أنا فقد خطرتْ في ببالي في ذلكَ اليوم فكرةٌ أخرى إذْ تساءلتُ: "تُرى ألا يمكن أن يكونَ هذا أسوأ؟".... فكِّرْ في الأمر: لننظرْ في التعذيبِ مثلاً. إنَّ الآلامَ والجروحَ والوجعَ الجسمي، إنَّ هذا كلَّهُ يشغلُ النفسَ عنْ عذابها وينسيها ما قد تُكابدهُ منْ هول، فلا يتألمُ المرءُ عندئذٍ إلا مِنَ الجروحِ إلى أنْ يموتَ منها. والألمُ الرئيسي، والألمُ الذي هوَ أشدُ الآلامِ قوةً قد لا يكونُ ألمَ الجروح، بل الألمُ الذي ينشأُ عنْ يقينِ المرءِ منْ أنهُ بعدَ ساعةٍ ثمَ بعدَ عشرِ دقائقَ ثمَ بعدَ نصفِ دقيقة، ثمَ الآنَ فورًا، ستتركُ روحهُ جسدها، وأنهُ لنْ يكونَ بعدَ تلكَ اللحظةِ إنسانًا، وأنَّ هذا أكيد، أنّهُ أكيدٌ خاصَة. فحينَ يَضعُ المرءُ رأسهُ تحتَ المِقصَلةِ البَتَّارَة، وحينَ يسمعُ انزلاقها فوقه، في ربعِ الثانيةِ ذاك، إنَما يشعرُ المرءُ بالخوفِ الأكبر. هل تعلمُ أنَّ هذا الذي أقولهُ ليسَ مستمدًا مِنَ الخيالِ فحسب؟ لقد ذكرهُ كثيرون. وإني لأبلغُ من قوةِ الاقتناعِ بهِ أنّني سأقولُ ُلكَ رأيي في هذا الأمرِ صريحًا كلَّ الصراحة. أنا أرى أنَّ قتلَ إنسانٍ بسببِ ارتكابهِ جريمةََ قتلٍ هو قصاصٌ لا تناسبَ بينهُ وبينَ الجريمةِ نفسها. إنَّ قتلَ قاتلٍ أفظعُ كثيرًا منْ جريمةِ القتلِ التي ارتكبها ذلكَ القاتل. إنَّ الإنسانَ الذي يقتلهُ القتلة، إذْ يذبحونهُ ليلاً في غابةٍ أو غيرها، يظلُّ إلى آخرِ لحظةٍ يأملُ أنْ ينجو. يروى عنْ مقتلوينَ أنهم ظلّوا، بعدَ حزِّ رقابهم، يأملونَ ويحاولونَ الفرارَ ويتضرعونَ سائلينَ الشَّفقةََ عليهم والرأفةََ بهم. أما في الإعدام فأن الأملَ الأخير، الأملَ الذي يجعلُ احتمالَ الموتِ أسهل َعشرَ مراتٍ يُنتزعُ منكَ "حتمًا". إنَّ صدورَ الحُكمِ واستحالةُ الإفلاتِ منهُ هما اللذانِ يجعلانِ العذابَ رهيبًا فظيعًا. صَدقني: ليسَ في الدنيا عذابٌ أشدُ هولاً من هذا العذاب. لو أخذتَ جنديًا فوضعتهُ في قلبِ المعركة أمامَ فوهةِ المدفع، ثم أطلقتَ عليهِ النار، لظلَّ يحتفظُ بالأملِ إلى آخرِ لحظة. أما إذا قرأتَ لهذا الجندي نفسهُ قرارًا يحكمُ عليهِ بموتٍ "مؤكد"، فإنَ هذا الجنديّ سيفقدُ عندئذٍ عقله، أو سيجهشُ باكيًا. مَنْ ذا الذي قررَ أنَ الطبيعة الإنسانية تستطيعُ أنْ تحتملَ تعذيبًا كهذا التعذيبِ دونَ أنْ تهوي إلى الجنون؟ فيمَ إيقاعُ أذىً يبلغُ هذا المبلغ مِنَ السوء والعقم؟ ربما كان يوجدُ في هذا العالمِ إنسانٌ حُكمَ عليهِ بالموت، وشُرِغَ في تعذيبهِ ذلك التعذيب، ثم قيلَ لهُ أخيرًا: "امضِ فقد صَدْرَ عفوٍ عنك". إنَّ في وسعِ هذا الإنسان أنْ يحكي لكم وأنْ يَقُصَ عليكم.”
