No legitimate work, undertaken for the glory of God, is menial or meaningless. Hard physical labor wasn’t beneath the dignity of the Son of God. Jesus worked as a carpenter for about seventeen years and only about three years doing itinerant ministry. Carpentry was a lowly, ill-paying profession. Yet Jesus was doing God’s work when pounding a nail just as much as He was doing it when preaching on a hillside–because He was doing what God wanted Him to do when God wanted Him to do it (p. 143).

A woman doesn’t just wake up one morning and decide to have an affair. No. The affair happens when day after day she fails to put on the brakes with her thoughts, fantasies, and sexual boundaries.

A godly woman’s soft responsiveness is coupled with an uncompromising determination to respond appropriately—to enthusiastically say “yes” to the right things and respectfully say “no” to the wrong things.

The reason the Lord holds you to the fire is not to punish you, but to reveal the splendor of Christ through your life. It’s not so that you might earn God’s favor; it’s because you’ve already received God’s favor.

God the Father invented the family. He’s the one who determines its meaning, purpose, and role. He’s the one who instituted marriage as a lifelong covenant between husband and wife. He’s the one who enables couples to be fruitful and multiply. He’s the Patēr (Father) from whom every patria (family) in heaven and earth is named. Marriage and family were created by Him and exist for Him.

The Lord does not want woman to function independent of man. Nor does He want woman to be unhealthily dependent on man, looking to him to meet all her needs. He wants male and female to be interdependent on one another—to value each other, and be mutually influenced, supported, and helped by one another. The Lord wants the marriage relationship—and the relationship between males and females in general—to showcase the kinship, commitment, unity, communion, authenticity, and purity that are the hallmark of His relationships.

In answer to James and John’s request for an esteemed place in God’s kingdom, Jesus taught that true greatness comes by serving, not by selfishly seeking a position of authority. No one has an inherent right to claim a position of authority. The Father assigns such positions (Rom. 13:1). Jesus knew this. Even Christ’s authority was delegated to Him by God the Father (Matt. 28:18).

Have you noticed that Satan’s tactics really haven’t changed? He tempts us to fall for the idea that our lives will be better when we take matters into our own hands and decide for ourselves how we want to live. He tries to get us to leave God out of the equation and to focus on our rights, our power, and our potential. He wants us to have a “do it myself,” independent spirit that plays the blame game, and sets men up as the enemy; or a needy spirit that sets men up as god, and turns to them to fill the relational vacuum in our hearts.

The Bible teaches that all authority rightfully belongs to God. Any legitimate authority people wield is delegated to them by God, and they must answer to Him for the way they use it. Authority is not to be used for personal gain. It’s not about displaying personal power. It’s about obediently serving the God who assigned you to serve in such a position—the very attitude demonstrated by Christ Himself.

Jesus taught that authority is not about rights; it’s about responsibility. It’s not about getting; it’s about giving. It’s not about selfishness; it’s about selflessness. It’s not me-focused; it’s other-focused. It’s not the right to demand service; it’s the responsibility to provide it. Authority is a position of weighty responsibility that demands radical obedience to the One from whom all authority flows. Greater authority demands greater responsibility. Scripture warns that those in such positions will be “judged with greater strictness” (James 3:1).

Having a heart and life that say “Yes, Lord!” is a hallmark of what it means to be a Christian. Jesus said that those who love Him would keep His commandments (John 14:15). Obedience is an evidence that we are truly children of God (1 Peter 1:14; see also Heb. 5:9; 11:8). In fact, according to Scripture, those who persistently disobey His Word, those who have no inclination to obey Him, have no basis for assurance that they belong to Him.
