R. C. Sproul

Robert Charles Sproul was an American Reformed theologian and ordained pastor in the Presbyterian Church in America. He was the founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries and could be heard daily on the Renewing Your Mind radio broadcast in the United States and internationally. Under Sproul's direction, Ligonier Ministries produced the Ligonier Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, which would eventually grow into the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, of which Sproul, alongside Norman Geisler, was one of the chief architects. Sproul has been described as "the greatest and most influential proponent of the recovery of Reformed theology in the last century."

The worship to which we are called in our renewed state is far too important to be left to personal preferences, whims, or marketing strategies. Pleasing God is at the heart of worship. Therefore, our worship must be informed at every point by the Word of God as we seek God’s own instructions for worship that is pleasing to Him.

We should be concerned with our environment because God placed man in His garden and made Him responsible to dress, fill, keep, and replenish it. Adam and Eve were not given the right to exploit or abuse the created world. They were, however, made superordinate, not subordinate, to the animals. Animals are here for our well-being. We do not exist to serve them; they exist to serve us, and we are to rule them benevolently. Today, naturalism has replaced God with Mother Earth, and we do more to protect fish eggs than human fetuses. Our priorities are out of order.

But we cannot have purpose accidentally, and we cannot have intelligence unintelligently. Impersonality cannot produce personality because that would be unintentional intention, and we cannot have intention unintentionally. Just like the concept of self-creation, unintentional intentionality is an absurdity. If there is design in the universe, then this self-existent, eternal something that is responsible for generating the universe as we find it must be a self-existent, eternal, intelligent being, not merely a something. And if it is intelligent, then it must be personal. And if it is personal, we have now moved away from abstractions and have landed squarely on the pages of sacred Scripture.

The only Christ who can redeem you is the one who really exists, and the only Christ in whom faith will redeem you is the biblical Christ.

The central issue of Christianity is the issue of justification. It faces the dilemma squarely. The only possible way for an unjust person to stand in the presence of a just and holy God is to be justified. If we remain unjustified, we die in our sins. The only way we can be justified is by the righteousness of Christ. He alone has the merit necessary to cover us. That righteousness is received by faith. If we trust in Christ, we are covered by His righteousness and are justified by faith. If we do not trust in Christ, we will stand before God's judgment alone, unjust people before a just God.

Dualism is on a collision course with Christianity. The Christian faith has no stock in dualism. Satan may be opposed to God, but he is by no means equal to God. Satan is a creature; God is the Creator. Satan is potent; God is omnipotent. Satan is knowledgeable and crafty; God is omniscient. Satan is localized in his presence; God is omnipresent. Satan is finite; God is infinite. The list could go on. But it is clear from Scripture that Satan is not an ultimate force in any sense.

if we were to imagine the most pleasant experience possible and thought about doing that for eternity, we would be conceiving of something that would be closer to hell than to heaven.

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy" (1 Peter 4:12-13).

The Bible is His written Word, but it is mute. So, God used visual signs as part of His communication with His people. Along with His written Word, He gave a multitude of signs, symbols, external gestures, and rites. The purpose, just as in human communication, was to reinforce that Word.

Pascal said man’s grandeur is located in his unique ability to contemplate his own existence. Man alone can think of the future and speculate upon or imagine a better life than he currently enjoys or could ever bring to pass, and this is the source of his misery.
