R. C. Sproul

Robert Charles Sproul was an American Reformed theologian and ordained pastor in the Presbyterian Church in America. He was the founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries and could be heard daily on the Renewing Your Mind radio broadcast in the United States and internationally. Under Sproul's direction, Ligonier Ministries produced the Ligonier Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, which would eventually grow into the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, of which Sproul, alongside Norman Geisler, was one of the chief architects. Sproul has been described as "the greatest and most influential proponent of the recovery of Reformed theology in the last century."

Prayer is not just a tangential or peripheral part of corporate worship. In ancient Israel, the primary function of worship was the offering of prayer. And so it should be in our churches today. Our sanctuaries should be houses of prayer.

The key issue is this: Must we have a comprehensive knowledge of God in order to have true knowledge of God? One of the first principles in systematic theology regarding God is the doctrine of His incomprehensibility. This means that no human can now or will ever have a totally exhaustive, comprehensive knowledge and understanding of God. God is infinite in His excellence, and we, even in heaven, will not have an infinite perspective to understand Him. We are finite creatures, and by virtue of our creatureliness, our understanding of God is limited. If, indeed, a comprehensive picture of God were required to have a true understanding of Him, this would mean that we could have no true knowledge of God because we certainly don’t have a comprehensive knowledge of Him. Therefore, the fact that our knowledge of God is partial does not mean that our knowledge is untrue.

Jesus did not call the temple a house of sacrifices or a house of preaching. He called it a house of prayer. The temple’s chief designation was that it was to be the focal point of the nation and of the people for prayer.

But we cannot have purpose accidentally, and we cannot have intelligence unintelligently. Impersonality cannot produce personality because that would be unintentional intention, and we cannot have intention unintentionally. Just like the concept of self-creation, unintentional intentionality is an absurdity. If there is design in the universe, then this self-existent, eternal something that is responsible for generating the universe as we find it must be a self-existent, eternal, intelligent being, not merely a something. And if it is intelligent, then it must be personal. And if it is personal, we have now moved away from abstractions and have landed squarely on the pages of sacred Scripture.

We should be concerned with our environment because God placed man in His garden and made Him responsible to dress, fill, keep, and replenish it. Adam and Eve were not given the right to exploit or abuse the created world. They were, however, made superordinate, not subordinate, to the animals. Animals are here for our well-being. We do not exist to serve them; they exist to serve us, and we are to rule them benevolently. Today, naturalism has replaced God with Mother Earth, and we do more to protect fish eggs than human fetuses. Our priorities are out of order.

Christ is the only Mediator because He is the only begotten and divine Son of God, the only God incarnate, and He is alive. No one else can do the work of mediation that He does for us.
