What Are You Doing? | Pastor Steven Furtick | Elevation Church

In 1960, Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church was first organized in a small frame building at 3602 Drew Street in the Third Ward area of Houston under the leadership of Reverend Norris Terry.  Reverend Terry resigned as Pastor after four years of service.

• Reverend Willie E. Powell 1964 to 1981
He was instrumental in moving the church from it's original location.

• Reverend Curtis Wallace 1981 to 1990
Under his leadership a larger place of worship was built adjacent to the existing edifice.  The old building was renovated unto classrooms, a spacious cafeteria and a small Chapel.  Reverend Wallace resigned as Pastor in 1990.

• Reverend Terry K. Anderson 1991 to Present
Lilly Grove called Reverend Terry K. Anderson of Eunice, Louisiana to become the fourth Pastor, on December 18, 1990. Reverend Anderson began his tenure as Pastor on the first Sunday in February 1991.

In Genesis 17–21, Abraham, Sarah, and others respond to God’s promises with different kinds of laughter—some filled with doubt, some shaped by skepticism, some rooted in resistance, and one transformed by joy. This message explores how the way we “laugh” at God reveals the kind of life we’re living with Him. 
 
This sermon invites us to move from disbelief to trust—and from skepticism to redeeming joy through the faithfulness of God. 
 
Four kinds of laughter in Genesis 17–21: 
 
1. Astonishing Doubt – “I don’t see it, so it’s hard to believe it.” (Genesis 17:17–18) 
2. Cynical Skepticism – “I don’t think God will do it.” (Genesis 18:12–15) 
3. Antagonistic Mocking – “I despise that God did it.” (Genesis 21:9–10) 
4. Redeeming Laughter – “God actually did it!” (Genesis 21:1–7) 
 
Ultimately, the laughter surrounding Isaac—the son of promise—points forward to the ultimate Son of Promise, Jesus, whose death and resurrection turn sorrow into joy and disbelief into worship. 
 
God still transforms doubt-filled laughter into redeeming joy today.

This is part of the Messianic Woes, the pressure and persecution that come with following Him. Palm Sunday has always been an important day in the life of the people of God. It marks the official beginning of Holy Week, which commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, and it also sets the stage for Jesus’ death and extraordinary resurrection that we celebrate on Easter Sunday. Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem fulfilled many Old Testament prophecies. This Palm Sunday we will look at the end of Psalm 118, where we see some of these prophecies.
