God has brought The Brooklyn Tabernacle from a handful of members in a small rundown building in a difficult area, to a congregation of more than 10,000 weekly attendees. Pastor Cymbala and his wife Carol, who directs the popular Grammy Award winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, have been used by the Lord not only to preach the Gospel in the inner city of New York, but also to see new churches grow out of the congregation across New York, as well as domestically and internationally. The ministry of the Church has from the outset reached out to the cross-cultural melting pot of New York City. It is comprised of men, women, and children of all ethnic and national origins. However, central to the growth and expansion of the Church has been the continual emphasis on prayer, from the Tuesday Night Prayer Meeting that is attended by thousands to the Prayer Band, members of the Church devoted to boldly "calling on the Lord" for needs from around the world.

In 1983, he became the senior pastor at Parkside Church near Cleveland, Ohio.  He has written several books and is heard daily and weekly on the radio program, Truth For Life.  The teaching on Truth For Life stems from the week by week Bible teaching at Parkside Church.

He and his wife, Susan, were married in 1975 and they have three grown children.

What is the Shema? 
The Shema is the foundational Jewish prayer recited twice daily, declaring God's oneness and commanding total devotion. When Jesus quoted this passage, He affirmed that nothing has changed regarding what God fundamentally requires. Learn why this ancient confession remains the starting point for genuine faith. 
 
Understanding Love for God: 
Jesus uses the Greek word “agapaō”—a deliberate, volitional love that goes beyond emotion to committed action. This isn't about feelings alone, but about directing your whole being toward God. Discover what it practically means to love God with every faculty you possess. 
 
The Three Dimensions of Loving God: 
1. With All Your Heart (kardia) - Your emotional center, desires, and will. 
 
2. With All Your Soul (psychē) - Your entire being, life force, and existence. 
 
3. With All Your Mind (dianoia) - Your intellect, reasoning, and understanding. 
 
A 2018 study found that church attendance alone doesn't lead to life satisfaction—it's authentic, relational love toward God that makes the difference. Religious routine without genuine love leaves us empty. This sermon challenges us to examine whether our lives truly declare the Shema or if we've settled for going through the motions.
