James Burton Coffman

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - 2 Thessalonians 3:16

Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with you all.All times ... all ways ... and all the Christians ... Paul included even the offenders in the terms of this loving benediction. "Peace here is to be taken in its widest sense, peace with God, complete salvation."[20] The benediction may not be read therefore as a mere plea for God to quiet the disorders in Thessalonica, although of course that would be included in the perfect fulfillment of it. read more

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - 2 Thessalonians 3:16

16. Lord of peace—Jesus Christ. The same title is given to Him as to the Father, "the GOD of peace" (Romans 15:33; Romans 16:20; 2 Corinthians 13:11). An appropriate title in the prayer here, where the harmony of the Christian community was liable to interruption from the "disorderly." The Greek article requires the translation, "Give you the peace" which it is "His to give." "Peace" outward and inward, here and hereafter (2 Corinthians 13:11- :). always—unbroken, not changing with outward... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - 2 Thessalonians 3:16

He concluded with two more prayers, his fourth and fifth (2 Thessalonians 3:18) in this epistle (cf. 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12; 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17; 2 Thessalonians 3:5). He knew that without the Lord’s convicting work his instructions and exhortations would be ineffective. His main concern was for peace in the church that could only take place as all the Christians obeyed the truth. God is the source of peace that a church enjoys to the extent that all of its members relate submissively to... read more

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - 2 Thessalonians 3:16

(16) Now.—Rather, And, or But. The prayer is joined to the exhortations, as in 2 Thessalonians 2:16 and elsewhere, and of course bears upon the subject of them. The Lord of peace.—We had “the God of peace” at the close of the last Epistle (1 Thessalonians 5:23, where see the Note). The “peace” prayed for here has perhaps a more immediate reference to external matters than in the parallel passage. St. Chrysostom suggests the danger of quarrels breaking out owing to the administration of the... read more

Expositor's Dictionary of Texts - 2 Thessalonians 3:1-18

Patience 2 Thessalonians 3:5 'The patience of Christ.' It is so the phrase runs in our R.V. as also in the margin of the A.V., in place of the A.V. 'patient waiting for Christ'. The phrase once spoken is felt to be inevitable; Paul could not have written otherwise. Patience is so truly the word of the Christ life. We have all traced, as St. John does, in the features of the Christ before High Priest or Pilate and on the cross, the likeness of the suffering Servant of Jehovah, who bore our... read more

Expositor's Bible Commentary - 2 Thessalonians 3:16-18

Chapter 24FAREWELL2 Thessalonians 3:16-18 (R.V.)THE first verse of this short passage is taken by some as in close connection with what goes before. In the exercise of Christian discipline, such as it has been described by the Apostle, there may be occasions of friction or even of conflict in the Church; it is this which he would obviate by the prayer, "The Lord of peace Himself give you peace always." The contrast is somewhat forced and disproportioned: and it is certainly better to take this... read more
