The Pulpit Commentary - John 6:29

Christ's reply really solves the great problem which had long perplexed the schools of Palestine, and often, and even to the present hour, is dividing into two hostile camps the Christian Church. Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God. Observe, not "works," but "work"—the one work which is the germ and the consummation of all the partial workings which are often made substitutes for it. There is "one work" which God would have man do. Jesus admits that there is something to... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - John 6:29

This is the work of God - This is the thing that will be acceptable to God, or which you are to do in order to be saved. Jesus did not tell them they had nothing to do, or that they were to sit down and wait, but that there was a work to perform, and that was a duty that was imperative. It was to believe on the Messiah. This is the work which sinners are to do; and doing this they will be saved, for Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth, Romans 10:4. read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - John 6:28-29

John 6:28-29. Then said they Desiring to appear willing to receive his instructions, as well as his bounties; What shall we do that we may work the works of God? Works pleasing to God, so as to secure his favour, and eternal life. Jesus answered, This is the work of God The work most pleasing to God, and the foundation of all others; that ye believe on him whom he hath sent That you acknowledge him for the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, (John 20:31; 1 John 4:14-15;) that you... read more

67. The bread of life (John 6:22-59)Many Jews were determined to find Jesus and make him king. Although he had escaped from them after the feeding of the multitude, they were out the next day looking for him (John 6:22-24).Jesus knew that these people wanted him to be king not because they felt any spiritual need, but because they thought he had magical powers that could supply all their daily needs. He urged them not to think just of physical and temporal blessings, but to seek the spiritual... read more

Thomas Coke

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - John 6:29-30

John 6:29-30. This is the work of God,— The Jews having their minds filled with the notion of the great empire which the Messiah was to erect, expected, no doubt, that Jesus would have bidden them first rise against the Romans, and vindicate their liberties, and then, by the terror of fire and sword, establish the Messiah's authority in every country. Wherefore, when he told them that the whole work which God required of them towards erecting the Messiah's kingdom, was, that they should believe... read more

3. The bread of life discourse 6:22-59Jesus proceeded to clarify His identity by teaching the crowds and His disciples. He did so by developing the figure of the Bread of Life, which He claimed to be. Jesus used the feeding of the 5,000 as a basis for explaining His identity to the multitudes. He compared Himself to bread."Again, it was a ministry of ’grace and truth’ (John 1:17). In grace, our Lord fed the hungry people; but in truth, He gave them the Word of God." Jesus’ creating desire for the bread 6:26-34This section of the text contains Jesus’ enigmatic and attractive description of the Bread of Life. Jesus was whetting His hearers’ appetites for it (cf. John 4:10). The pericope ends with them asking Him to give them the Bread (John 6:34). read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - John 6:29

The only work that God requires of people for salvation is faith in His Son (cf. John 3:11-17). The work that Jesus specified was not something physical at all. It was what God requires, namely, trust in Jesus (cf. Romans 3:28). Jesus’ reply was a flat contradiction of the idea that people can earn salvation with their good deeds. This is another of the many great evangelistic verses in John’s Gospel (John 1:12; John 3:16; John 3:36; John 5:24; John 6:47; et al.). read more
