Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Colossians 2:7

Rooted ...in him - As a tree strikes its roots deep in the earth, so our faith should strike deep into the doctrine respecting the Saviour. See the phrase used here explained in the parallel place in Ephesians 3:17.And established in the faith, as ye have been taught - To wit, by the founders of the church, and by those faithful ministers who had succeeded them; Notes, Colossians 1:7.Abounding therein with thanksgiving - Expressing overflowing thanks to God that you have been made acquainted... read more

Colossians 2:6-7. As, or since, ye have received Christ Jesus the Lord Have acknowledged Jesus of Nazareth to be the true Messiah promised to the Jews, and consequently a divinely-commissioned Teacher, Mediator, Saviour, and Lawgiver; yea, the great Prophet, Priest, and King of his church, and therefore your sovereign Lord, and the final Judge of men and angels; so walk ye in him Let your spirit and conduct, your dispositions, words, and actions, be in perfect consistency with this... read more

2:6-3:4 FALSE VIEWS LEAD TO BONDAGEFreedom through Christ (2:6-15)Again Paul reminds the believers that receiving Christ is only the beginning of the Christian life. There must be continual growth through building the life on him (6-7).The Colossians know that God has freed them from the powers of evil (see 1:13). If, then, they turn and accept a religion powered by the unseen spiritual forces of evil, they are placing themselves in bondage once again (8). Christ needs no angelic powers to help... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Colossians 2:6

As therefore ye received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and builded up in him, and established in your faith, even as ye were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. In him ... in him ... in your faith ... These are all references to the Christian's fidelity "in Christ Jesus," that is, as bona fide members of his church, fully identified as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ.Rooted and builded up ... Barry pointed out a significant change of tense: "Having been rooted in him once for... read more

6. "As therefore ye received (once for all; the aorist tense; from Epaphras) Jesus the Christ as your Lord (compare 1 Corinthians 12:3; 2 Corinthians 4:5; Philippians 3:8), so walk in Him." He says not merely, "Ye received" the doctrine of Christ, but "Jesus" Himself; this is the essence of faith (John 14:21; John 14:23; Galatians 1:16). Ye have received once for all the Spirit of life in Christ; carry into practice that life in your walk (Galatians 1:16- :). This is the main scope of the... read more

7. Rooted— ( :-). built up—Greek, "being builded up." As "rooted" implies their vitality; so "builded up," massive solidity. As in the Song of Solomon, when one image is not sufficient to express the varied aspects of divine truth, another is employed to supply the idea required. Thus "walking," a third image (Colossians 2:6), expresses the thought which "rooted" and "built," though each suggesting a thought peculiar to itself, could not express, namely, onward motion. "Rooted" is in the past... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Colossians 2:6

In particular, Paul encouraged his readers to continue following Christ in harmony with the sound teaching that had resulted in their conversion. [Note: See H. Wayne House, "The Christian Life according to Colossians," Bibliotheca Sacra 151:604 (October-December 1994):440-54.] His point was not that as the Colossians had become Christians by faith in Christ they should continue to walk by faith. This is clear from Paul’s word translated "received." It usually refers to the reception of truth... read more
