Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 8:19-21

Jesus’ Own Family Do Not Receive Him: The Son of Man Is Rejected (8:19-21). We have already considered these verses in connection with the previous part, but reintroduce them here because they also form the commencement of this new part. Here His own family remain ‘on the outside’. They are not ready to receive Him. They act as a warning that Jesus will not be accepted by everyone. In view of what chapter 9 contains of a continual threat of death this must be seen as significant. read more

3). Jesus is Revealed As The Messiah Who Has Come With Power (8:19-9:36). In this third part of Section 3 Jesus is Revealed as the glorious Messiah Who has come with power but will be involved in suffering and death (Luke 8:19 to Luke 9:36). It may be analysed as follows: a He no longer owns responsibility to His own family who do not believe in Him, and are on the outside (His own do not recognise Him) (Luke 8:19-21). b He is revealed as the One Who is from above by quelling the storm,... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Luke 8:21

‘But he answered and said to them, “My mother and my brethren are these who hear the word of God, and do it.” ’ So He replied that the ones who had a right to His attention now were not His earthly family, but His ‘heavenly’ family, those who heard the word of God and did it, those who responded to Him as Messiah. This undoubtedly included those mentioned in Luke 8:1-3. Now that He had begun His ministry family ties were broken. All His efforts must now be concentrated on His future task with... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Luke 8:19-21

CRITICAL NOTESLuke 8:19-21.—St. Luke gives this incident as occurring after the parable of the sower, though without any precise note of time: St. Matthew and St. Mark relate it as occurring before that parable was spoken. It is probable that the latter evangelists follow the more correct order of time.Luke 8:19. His mother and His brethren.—From the fact that Joseph is not mentioned, it is reasonable to suppose that he was dead. The fact that the members of His family came thus in a body seems... read more

Luke 8:2 . Mary, called Magdalene. Origen reckons three women who anointed the Saviour. The first, in the house of Simon the pharisee. Luke 7:37. The second, the woman who anointed him six days before the passover. Mark 14:8. The third, the sister of Lazarus, who anointed him in the house of Simon the leper, Matthew 26:6-7. Chrysostom regards the two last as the same person. Out of whom went seven devils. Some of the ancient fathers of the church understand this of the vices to which she... read more

Luke 8:19-21Then came to Him His mother and His brethrenSpiritual relationship to ChristIt is the higher kinship of the soul.Christ did not set aside time relationships, but He opened up a far higher view, with which these were in analogy. Men know each other in various relationships; but very few men know themselves. Very few men know one another; but in the degree in which they do, they know each other at different points of the wide extension of man and his relations. A man may know his... read more
