Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 28:7-20

The Final Triumph (28:7-20). Following this remarkable experience of the women, we now come to the climax of the Gospel, the resurrection appearances and the giving of the Great Commission. The subsection commences with an appearance to the women disciples, (a reminder of God’s interest in the seemingly unimportant who are faithful in worship and service), goes on to deal with men’s vain attempts to deny the resurrection by falsehoods, and finalises in the appearance of Jesus to His disciples... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 28:16-20

Jesus Appears To His Disciples In Bodily Form And Reveals That He Has Been Crowned As Lord Of All. He Sends His Disciples Out To Proclaim The Good News To All Nations And To Call On Them To Observe All His Commandments (28:16-20). Jesus now appears and reveals His new heavenly Kingship, and calls on His disciples to go out in His name in order to make disciples of people from all nations, giving them the assurance that He will go with them and be with them wherever they go, and however long it... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 28:20

“Teaching them to observe all things whatever I commanded you.” Their mission is also to be one of teaching. They are now to fulfil their role as Scribes of the Kingly Rule of Heaven bringing forth what is new (what Jesus has brought) and what is old (the Scriptures) (Matthew 13:52). The Messianic movement into the world is not to be by warfare or force of arms. That is how false religions spread. It is to be by proclamation of the truth, by the sword of the word. Men must be won by truth and... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 28:16-20

Matthew 28:16-Proverbs : . Conclusion. Jesus Appears in Galilee.—“ The mountain” ( Matthew 28:16) reminds us of Matthew 5:1 or Matthew 17:1. The statement that “ some (rather, they) doubted” brings the narrative into line with Luke 24:37, John 20:25, and in any case points to the gradual nature of the growth of the Resurrection belief. Matthew 28:18 reminds us of Matthew 11:27, but is not like Jesus, and is best taken as “ a ré sumé of the Christian faith and the Church’ s mission.” Matthew... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Matthew 28:18-20

Mark saith, Mark 16:15-18, And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Our blessed Lord in... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Matthew 28:16-20

CRITICAL NOTESMatthew 28:16. Then.—But (R.V.). Certainly not before the second week after the resurrection, and probably somewhat later (Brown). The eleven disciples.—They come forward here as the representatives of the entire band of disciples, and not as the select apostolic college of the Twelve, which makes its first appearance after the selection of Matthias. This distinction is to be found in the remark that “some doubted,” which cannot apply to the Eleven. Reference is made to many... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Matthew 28:16-20

Matthew 28:16-20 (with 1 Corinthians 15:6 ) The question meets us today, as we think of the narrative of the text, How do we stand related to that assembly on the Galilean mountain, and to that last command of our adored Lord? The answer which I trust we shall all feel disposed to give is this, that we are related to that assembly just as though we had formed part of it, to that last command as though we had heard it in audible words from the lips of our Lord. That we may be confirmed in... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Matthew 28:19-20

Matthew 28:19-20 The Uniting Name. I. A set of Galilean fishermen were bidden to teach or make disciples of all nations. In some way or other these Galileans did make disciples among Jews, the worshippers of the I AM, the Jehovah; among Greeks, the worshippers of human heroes and the forms of nature. Consider what was necessary to bring these two portions of the world into a common fellowship. Those words which He spoke as He stood on the mount, "All power is given unto Me in heaven and earth,"... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Matthew 28:20

Matthew 28:20 Truth, and its Questions To-Day. I. We live in a time which is called a time of transition, when the old thoughts of men are contending in a sharp battle with the new so sharp that the very outsiders and camp-followers of the armies of the world, the idle men and women, take an interest and engage themselves therein in a desultory manner. Men and ideas astonish and confuse us. There is no certainty, it seems, in men. We become distrustful and indignant. But it is because we look... read more
