Wells of Living Water Commentary - Romans 3:19-31

Law and Grace Romans 3:19-31 INTRODUCTORY WORDS 1. The meaning and scope of the Law. Law is a word filled with glory, but wholly foreign to Grace. Law is the measure of the holy requirements of a righteous and just God. We are speaking of the Laws written on two tables of stone by the finger of God; and also of the Laws which God has given in His Word. When God gave the Law, He gave it as an expression of the requirements of His inherent holiness; and not as commandments lowered in their... read more

James Nisbet's Church Pulpit Commentary - Romans 3:20

WHAT IS SIN?‘For by the law is the knowledge of sin.’ Romans 3:20 The scriptural definition of sin is that ‘sin is the transgression of the law.’ And it is a most accurate and comprehensive description, for if there were no ‘law’ of any kind, there would be no ‘transgression.’ ‘Transgression’ is a stepping over a certain line, and the line—the only line—is ‘the law.’ I. There are many ‘laws,’ and the ‘transgression’ of any one of them is a ‘sin.’( a) There is the natural ‘law’ of conscience,... read more

Peter Pett

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Romans 3:9-20

Both Jew And Gentile Are In The Same Position. All Are Under Sin (3:9-20). Paul does not want any of his readers to think therefore that this puts them in a better position than the Jews, for as he has already demonstrated they are all ‘under sin’. So he continues to underline that fact by the citing of a miscellany of their own Scriptures, coming finally to the conclusion that the whole world is under judgment, and therefore guilty in the eyes of God. read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Romans 3:19-20

Thus The Law Ensures That All Are Found Guilty Before God (3:19-20). The consequence of all that has been described is that all men without exception are found by ‘the Law’ (the Scriptures) to be guilty before God. There is none righteous, no not one. read more

Peter Pett

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Romans 3:20

‘Because by the works of the law will no flesh be justified (accounted as in the right) in his sight, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.’ And this results from the fact that no flesh can be seen as ‘accounted as in the right’ in His sight by keeping ‘the works of the Law’, simply because no man can achieve the perfection required. Such a position cannot be achieved by observing the works of the Law (works done in obedience to the Law) for the simple reason that no one can keep them... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Romans 3:9-20

Romans 3:9-Proverbs : . sums up the impeachment of mankind. Romans 3:9 . Paul has beaten down Jewish counter-pleas; he and his fellow-believers (“ we” ) might be supposed to have some apology in reserve: “ What then? do we make any defence?” ( mg.). “ Not in the least! for we have already charged Jews and Greeks alike with being all under the power of sin.” Romans 3:10-Job : . The universal accusation is restated by a string of OT sentences (p. 805 ) gathered, with the exception of Romans... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Romans 3:20

Therefore; i.e. Seeing the Gentiles, by the law of nature, and the Jews, by the written law, are thus subject to the judgment of God; and seeing no one is able to fulfil the law, and satisfy for the breach of it; therefore, &c. By the deeds of the law; he means the moral law, and not the ceremonial law only or chiefly; even that law that forbids theft and adultery, as Romans 2:21,Romans 2:22, and concupiscence, as Romans 7:1-25; and by which, as this text says, is the knowledge of sin; to... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Romans 3:9-20

Romans 3:9-20 Every Mouth Stopped. I. Perhaps some readers are aware of a feeling of disappointment at reaching this result. Not that they doubt the native depravity of mankind, or the certainty that all men, left to themselves, will go very far astray from righteousness. But it may be said, ail men were not left to themselves. God interposed with a holy and awful law. He took one race under His own moral education. He taught them carefully the way of duty, and did what was possible to fence... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Romans 3:20

Romans 3:20 I. That wrath of God against sin, to which conscience testifies, is itself merely His love, the opposition of His love to that which exalts itself against it. The fire of His love lights and cheers and warms all that abides in His love; but is a consuming fire against all that is out of and contrary to His love. And he who knows not God's wrath against sin knows not God's love. He who regards not Christ as the Judge and Avenger does not thoroughly know Him as the Saviour. Man will... read more
