Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Mark 10:1-52

Jesus Begins His Final Journey to Jerusalem On The Road To The Cross and Spends Much Time in Teaching His Disciples And Disputing With His Enemies In Readiness For That Event, For He Is Giving His Life As A Ransom For Many (9:33-12:44). Having returned to Capernaum Jesus now has His face set towards Jerusalem, and in Mark 9:33-50 He will lay the foundation by pointing out the fact that all must look to and respond to His Name, and the dangers inherent in not doing so. Then He will advance into... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Mark 10:32-45

Jesus Presses on Towards Jerusalem Where He Will Give His Life As A Ransom For Many (10:32-45). It is only at this point that Mark draws our attention to the fact that Jesus has begun His final journey to Jerusalem, and having done so he will immediately hurry on to the final days. This contrasts with Luke who emphasised that Jesus’ face was set for Jerusalem seemingly long before He actually reached it (Luke 9:51). But the timing is in fact actually similar. It is only that Luke then includes... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Mark 10:35-45

James and John Seek the Highest Place (10:35-45). The words of Jesus found in Matthew 19:28, not recorded by Mark, had struck home. They appealed more to the thinking of the disciples than the talk of death. And James and John, as part of the Inner Three, egged on by their mother (Matthew 20:20), came with her to Jesus to seek to supplant Peter. Possibly they felt that Peter, having been addressed by Jesus as ‘Satan’ (Mark 8:33), was at present vulnerable as leader of the group. And besides... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Mark 10:45

“For truly the Son of Man came, not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” The perfect example was before them. The Son of Man, He Who would one day enter into God’s presence to receive the dominion and the power and the glory, and would return to earth in power and great glory, had come to earth to serve. He Who should have been served by all, had made Himself the servant of all. He had deliberately humbled Himself (Philippians 2:5-8). He was God’s Servant. He was... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Mark 10:35-45

Mark 10:35-Romans : . The Request of the Sons of Zebedee. The Christian Standard of Greatness.— In spite of anticipation of ill, the disciples continued to hope for a kingdom of worldly power, and to dispute as to their places in such a kingdom. Wellhausen claims that the reference to glory in Mark 10:37 is apocalyptic in character, and that the disciples may have been expecting a brief period of trial before the final splendour. If so, they have some dim idea that the cup and the baptism... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Mark 10:42-45

See Poole on "Matthew 20:25", and following verses to Matthew 20:28, where we had the same almost verbatim. Those that think it worth the while to inquire what critical men say about that phrase, οι δοκουντες αρχειν, which we translate they which are accounted to rule, may find it in Pool’s Synopsis Criticorum. When all is said, doubtless the οι αρχοντες in Matthew, and οι δοκουντες αρχειν,, and Luke’s οι βασιλεις, signify the same persons. And our translators might as justifiably have... read more

But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: and whosoever of you mill be the chiefest, shall be servant of... read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - Mark 10:1-52

Mark's gospel chapter 10:And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he wont [was accustomed], he taught them again ( Mark 10:1 ).Now, Jesus is leaving the area of the Galilee for the last time. He is on His way to Jerusalem to be crucified. He knows this. He presently will be telling the disciples this. They still do not understand; it's still, to them, a mystery. But yet, it's very clear in the mind... read more
