EXPLANATORY AND CRITICAL NOTESJohn 17:1. These things spake, etc. (ταῦτα ἐλάλησεν).—The reference is to the discourse just ended. Lifted up.—From the troubles of earth and time the mind and soul are raised to the thoughts of eternity. It is the attitude of the victorious incarnate Son, not that of the Man of Sorrows in the final temptation (Luke 22:41).
