John Trapp Complete Commentary - Matthew 10:7

7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Ver. 7. The kingdom of heaven is at hand ] Repent therefore. Men will do much for a kingdom. And nothing less than a kingdom, and that of heaven, can buy men out of their sweet sins. How many hear we daily making answer to the motion of this heavenly kingdom offered them by God, as the olive and vine did in Jotham’s parable! Shall I leave my fat and sweet sins, to reign, though with God? a And yet every man must be either a... read more

8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. Ver. 8. Heal the sick ] God glorifies himself by the fruits of our sin and the effects of his own wrath. This great Alchemist knows how to extract good out of evil. He can make golden afflictions, 1 Peter 1:7 , medicinal sicknesses, fetch his own honour out of the depths of our sufferings, as wine draws a nourishing virtue from the flesh of vipers, and as scarlet pulls out the viper’s... read more

Wesley's Explanatory Notes - Matthew 10:8

Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.Cast out devils — It is a great relief to the spirits of an infidel, sinking under a dread, that possibly the Gospel may be true, to find it observed by a learned brother, that the diseases therein ascribed to the operation of the devil have the very same symptoms with the natural diseases of lunacy, epilepsy, or convulsions; whence he readily and very willingly concludes, that the devil... read more

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 10:5-42

§ 57. CHARGE TO THE APOSTLES, Matthew 10:5-42 . The unity of this discourse demonstrates the oneness of its delivery, a point disputed by Olshausen and others. It consists properly of three parts. The first (Matthew 10:5-15) directs their demeanour during this present trial mission. The second (Matthew 10:16-23) predicts their trials and persecutions through their whole apostolate. The third (Matthew 10:24-42) states the duty of suffering, the struggle to ensue, and the results, namely,... read more

7. As ye go Our Lord here implies that they would continually extend their missionary travels. They were to be true itinerants, travelling after they had preached, and preaching as they travelled. The kingdom of heaven A kingdom which is the opposite of the kingdoms of this world, and still more of the kingdom of hell. Of this kingdom the crown prince is Messiah. When, therefore, they proclaimed the approach of this kingdom, they of course implied the Messiah’s coming. read more

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 10:8

8. Heal the sick The preaching was to be confirmed by the miracle. The miraculous powers were a foretaste and premonition of the nature of that kingdom. They were the first rays of its manifestation; and the powers of that kingdom, exercised by these apostles, prove them its true heralds. The four evils which these miracles removed, namely, sickness, leprosy, death, and devils, were all tokens and products of the reign of hell. Raise the dead This clause, being omitted by some... read more
