John Trapp Complete Commentary - Romans 3:23

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Ver. 23. All have sinned ] The first man defiled the nature, and ever since the nature defileth the man. Adam was a parent, a public person, a parliament man, as it were; the whole country of mankind was in him, and fell with him. Short of the glory of God ] i.e. Of his image now obliterated, or of his kingdom, upon the golden pavement whereof no dirty dog must ever trample. It is an inheritance undefiled, 1 Peter 1:4 . read more

John Trapp Complete Commentary - Romans 3:24

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Ver. 24. Being justified freely ] Because the apostle’s word δωρεα is expounded by Varinus to be χαριτος αλλαγη , therefore Thammerus will needs conclude from this text that God by justifying us, doth but pay for our pains, give us what we have earned. Caelum gratis non accipiam, saith Vega. Opera bona sunt caeli mercatura, saith another. Heaven is the purchase of good works. By the redemption ] i.e.... read more

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:And are justified — Pardoned and accepted.Freely — Without any merit of their own.By his grace — Not their own righteousness or works.Through the redemption — The price Christ has paid.Freely by his grace — One of these expressions might have served to convey the apostle's meaning; but he doubles his assertion, in order to give us the fullest conviction of the truth, and to impress us with a sense of its... read more

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible - Romans 3:21-31

II. THE REMEDY . JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH THROUGH THE ATONEMENT BY CHRIST. 1. Comprehensive Statement of Gratuitous Salvation by Faith in Christ’s Atoning Death , Romans 3:21-31 . This is the CENTRAL PARAGRAPH of the Epistle. In composing it our great apostle summons all his powers to the task of concentrating into one statement his doctrine of salvation “according to my gospel.” The paragraph is the solution of all that has preceded, and the theme of all that follows. It embraces the ... read more

23. All have sinned The all is all mankind, past, present, and future; the have sinned is, in the Greek, an instance of the apostle’s aoristic tenses, in which past, present, and future are comprehended. (See notes on Romans 4:12; Romans 8:29; Romans 9:22.) The tense is equivalent to a perpetual present, “an eternal now,” and so the phrase is tantamount to all men sin. It thus accords in sense with come short, which in the Greek is actually in the grammatical present. And the fact... read more

24. Being justified If at all justified. Freely Gratuitously. For though the justification is conditioned upon faith, yet the faith is no compensation to God for it. Faith being the self-surrender above described has indeed a sort of merit. It has the merit of being a right and not a wrong thing, as unfaith is. It is a compliance with the divine command. It is intrinsically an excellent thing or act, the very best thing indeed possible in the case. It has the merit, too, of suitableness or... read more
