Is Evangelism Really Relevant? by Cecil Peasley Is evangelism really relevant amidst the tangled complexities of our modern dilemmas? When we look at the many issues found in the world today, the HIV/AIDS problem, starvation, poverty, political and social injustices, weapons of mass destruction, the Middle East crisis etc., it would seem that evangelism is a ridiculous and downright dangerous misdirection of our energies. The question "Is evangelism relevant?" really means "Is the Evangel relevant?" i.e. is the message of evangelism relevant. Therefore when talking about relevancy what we are really asking is "Is Jesus Christ relevant" since He is the message of evangelism. Is the Gospel relevant? In the book of James, chapter 4 verse 1 we read, "from whence come wars and fighting's among you. Come they not hence even of your lusts…" i.e. behind the wars and human suffering is the age old problem of sin and it is right here that the message of evangelism finds its relevance "for thou shalt call His name Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins" – Matthew 1:21. What about the suffering from national disasters such as earthquakes? It is here where we need to determine the perspective from which we can address the question. ETERNITY is the only adequate perspective from which we view the relevance of evangelism. When eternal issues are at stake, the message of the Gospel will always have the last word through our eternal hope in Jesus Christ. To my fellow Evangelists, preach Jesus. He is relevant throughout all the ages – the same yesterday, today and forever. Keep faithful to Him – Hebrews 6:10.
