In the cartoon strip "Arlo and Janice" we find Arlo waking up, looking in the
mirror, and doing his best to practice all he knows about having a positive
mental attitude. As he glances into the mirror, he says to himself, beaming,
"A new day, ripe for the picking!" He straightens his tie, and says,
"Opportunity unlimited, pleasures untold.!" Then his smile turns to his frown
and his hands drop to his side. "Ha" he says dejectedly, and walks away.
Arlo's ability to see through the empty promises of merely thinking yourself
to better living is not only fodder for a good laugh, but serves as a reminder
of a biblical truth: Christ is the key to "opportunity unlimited and pleasures untold"--not the powers of the naked mind.
