Andrew Murray

Andrew Murray (1828 - 1917)

Brother Andrew Murray was a well-known writer/preacher in South Africa who ministered amongst the Dutch Reformed churches. His writings now are widely accepted by modern evangelicals and he is published more than ever in his life-time.

Some of his better known books titles are: "Abide In Christ", "Absolute Surrender," and "Humility." His burden for the body of Christ were teachings on the abiding Spirit of Christ in the believer, the life of faith with God daily, and the life of intercession and prayer in the Church.

Andrew Murray was possibly the strongest spokesman of the Philadelphian age to expound the Body's necessity to abide in Christ, like the Apostle John before him.

Murray was born into a family of four children in the then remote Graaff-Reinet region (near the Cape) of South Africa. Educated in Scotland, which was followed by theological studies in Holland, Andrew returned to his native land to work as a missionary and minister. Given the daunting task of ministering to Bloemfontein, a remote region of 50,000 square miles and 12,000 people beyond the Orange River, Murray already began to sense the need to for the "deeper Christian life".

Though successful in preaching and bringing many to Christ, Murray found many of his greatest lessons in the School of Suffering, as will all who follow in the path of obedience.

Andrew Murray was one of four children born to Pastor Andrew, Sr., and Maria Murray. He was raised in what was considered to be the most remote corner of the world - Graaff-Reinet, South Africa. Educated in Scotland and Holland, in 1848 Andrew, Jr., returned to South Africa as a missionary and minister with the Dutch Reformed Church. His first appointment was to Bloemfontein, a territory of nearly 50,000 square miles and 12,000 people.

Andrew and his brother John had been in close contact with a revival movement in Scotland, an evangelical extension of the ongoing Second Great Awakening in America. He prayed for the same sort of awakening for the church in South Africa and wrote, "My prayer is for revival, but I am held back by the increasing sense of my own unfitness for the work. I lament the awful pride and self complacency that have till now ruled my heart. O that I may be more and more a minister of the Spirit." (J. du Plessis, The Life of Andrew Murray)

In 1860, revival did come to the churches of Cape Town, South Africa, and subsequently spread to surrounding towns and villages. Even remote farms and plantations felt the impact as lives were changed. Where once the churches had not been able to find one man ready to be a leader for God, the revival raised up 50 in Murray's Cape Town parish alone. There were more conversions in one month in that parish than in the whole course of its previous history. (Leona Choy, Andrew Murray: Apostle of Abiding Love)

Greatly concerned for the spiritual guidance of new converts and renewed Christians, Andrew Murray wrote over 240 books. His writings reflect his own longing for a deeper life in Christ and his prayer that others would long for and experience that life as well.

God Maintains Your Surrender

That is the great difficulty with many. People say: “I have often been stirred at a meeting, or at a convention, and I have consecrated myself to God, but it has passed away. I know it may last for a week or for a month, but away it fades, and after a time it is all gone.” But listen! It is because ... Read More

God So Loved The World

The love of God has proved itself in the gift of the son, of himself. In sending Christ to become man God proved that he longed to have man one with himself, that all his life and love as God was for man, that man might be made partaker of the divine nature. And the wonderful, the blessed ‘whosoever... Read More

God Works All

2. God Works All. ‘Through him are all things.’ He did not only begin; he alone continues and maintains. As wonderful and mysterious as is the ‘of him’ is also the ‘through him’. He did not, as the Deist dreams, part with a certain portion of his life and power, leaving the creature to himself and c... Read More

God’s heart is set on the salvation of men and women.

God’s heart is set on the salvation of men and women; the gift of his Son and Spirit is the proof of it. God’s heart is set upon making us fellow-labourers, sharers in the glory and blessedness of his work. For every command the promise holds good: ‘My grace is sufficient for thee.’ To the last grea... Grieving the Spirit

"Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption" Ephesians 4:30. It is by the Holy Spirit that the child of God is sealed, separated, stamped, and marked as the possession of God. This sealing is not a dead or external action that is finished once and for all. It... Read More

He Died For Everyone

He died for sin, bearing its curse, and suffering death as God's righteous judgment on account of it. His death opened up the way to God for us. It did for us what we cannot and need not do; it wrought out a finished salvation, which we have but to accept and repose upon. According to the other aspe... Read More

He is all. He works all. He claims all

This will be the highest glory of the final consummation of all things, when the Son shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father, and shall himself be subject, unto him that put all things under him, and God shall be all in all. It was for this the Son lived and died and rose again. ... Read More

Hints-for the Inner Chamber; Time

At the conference, a brother who had earnestly confessed his neglect of prayer, but who was able, later, to declare that his eyes had been opened to see that the Lord really supplied grace for all that he required from us, asked if some hints could not be given as to the best way of spending time pr... Holy Spirit as Revealer of the Things of God

The Spirit is the very life and power of God; all that he reveals is truth and power. Holy Spirit as the Spirit of truth

We all know how little, while the Lord Jesus was on earth with his disciples, his instructions really profited them. How is it possible that men should delight in what they do not believe

It may well be asked: how it is possible that men should delight in knowing about what they do not with their heart believe, and about what they neither are nor live out? There is a double answer.
