Charles G. Finney

Charles Finney (1792 - 1875)

Known as one of the leaders in the Second Great Awakening revival in America. He was a revivalist who called for deep introspection of sin and preaching of the law to bring about sin. He was known to preach 30+ nights on sin and than the last night on Christ to have people flee to Him for mercy. Used greatly in the book: "Revivals of Religion" which is a classic on the subject of revival.

He preached on the true Baptism of the Holy Spirit and its necessity. In his revivalistic campaigns he was used of the Lord to bring some estimate over 50,000 souls to the Lord which many were sound converts. There has been questions raised surrounding his theology in the later years of his ministry but this does not discredit that God used him powerfully in revival and for God's kingdom.

Charles Finney was born in Connecticut to an ordinary family and life that gave little hint of the great things God had in store for him. He was a schoolteacher and then a lawyer before his conversion at age 29. Finney was filled with the Holy Spirit on the same day he was saved and immediately began witnessing to friends and family members. More than twenty people were saved in the 24 hours following Finney's conversion. Finney's personal evangelism soon became public evangelism as he began to travel and preach in extended revival meetings. He considered revival to be a natural result of following the instructions God had laid out in His Word.

During Finney's fifty years of preaching, more than 500,000 were saved. He wrote many books, the most enduring of which are The Autobiography of Charles Finney and Lectures on Revival of Religion. After ill health forced him to stop traveling in meetings, he accepted the pastorate of a church in New York City. From 1852 until 1866 he served as president of Oberlin College in Ohio. Although some of his theology was lacking, he was a powerful, Spirit-filled soul winner who brought revival to cities and towns across the eastern United States.

What Will Bring Revival in America?

by Jonathan Duttweiler (adapted from charles finneys writings). Much is being written and preached today concerning Revival. From every corner we hear America must have Revival or it will die (never realizing that she is dead already, thereby necessitating Revival!). Others proclaim that Revival is ... Read More

Where Sin Occurs God Cannot Wisely Prevent It

"It is impossible but that offences come; but woe unto him through whom they come!" -- Luke xvii. 1. AN "offence" as used in this passage, is an occasion of falling into sin. It is anything which causes another to sin and fall. It is plain that the author of the offence is in this passage conceived ... Read More

Where Sin Occurs God Cannot Wisely Prevent It

WHO ARE WE TRYING TO FOOL?

"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves"--James 1:22 Anyone who does not practice what he admits to be true is self-deceived. Two classes of hypocrites exist among professing Christians--those that deceive others and those that deceive themselves. One class of h... Read More

Why Sinners Hate God

JOHN XV. 25. --["]They have hated me without a cause." These are the words of our Lord Jesus Christ. In my two former discourses on total depravity, I have endeavoured to demonstrate that all impenitent sinners hate God supremely. And having, as I suppose, established this doctrine beyond controvers... Read More

For The Oberlin Evangelist. Beloved--In the present letter, I design to give a few only of the reasons, why the converts of the great revivals have not grown more in grace. 1. The older members of the Church, that were professors before their conversion, have been a stumbling block to them. In many ... Read More

Why The Converts of The Great Revivals Have Not Grown More In Grace # 2

TO THE CHRISTIAN READERS OF THE OBERLIN EVANGELIST. Beloved--Another reason why converts have not grown more in grace, is they have suffered themselves, to a greater or less extent, to be swept away by the current of public opinion in the church into the popular sins of the day. One of these sins (v... Read More

Wisdom Justified of Her Children

"But wisdom is justified of all her children." Luke 7:35 Before I enter directly upon the discussion of the text, I will remark, 1. WORLDLY AMUSEMENTS

A few more words will be permitted, perhaps, on the subject of worldly amusements. In these articles I, of course, use the term amusements in the popular sense of pleasure seeking, by a resort to worldly entertainments, agreeable sports, and pastimes. The question often arises: "Are we never to seek... Read More

The Inner and The Outer Revelation

THERE are many who believe that a loose indefinite infidelity has rarely, if ever, been more prevalent in our country than at this time, especially among young men.
