Charles Spurgeon

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was an English Baptist pastor and writer. He still remains influential among Christians and still known as the "Prince of Preachers."

He was converted to Christ at the age of 16 and immediately began preaching. He preached in the streets and in the fields before he was 21. In his first church, he began with 100 members. It grew until he was preaching to 10,000 people in the Surrey Music Hall. His church, the Metropolitan Tabernacle, seated 6,000 people. He withdrew from every movement among English Baptists which tended to criticize the Authorized Version 1611 in any way.

Before his death, he published more than 2,000 sermons and 49 volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations, and devotions.

God Routs Fear

Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel. (Numbers 23;23) How this should cut up root and branch all silly, superstitious fears! Even if there were any truth in witchcraft and omens, they could not affect the people of the Lord. Those whom God bles... Read More

God Will Answer

He quill fulfill the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them. (Psalm 145:19) His own Spirit has wrought this desire in us, and therefore He will answer it. It is His own life within which prompts the cry, and therefore He will hear it. Those who fear Him are men... Read More

God with Us

God shall be with ye. (Genesis 48:21) Good old Jacob could no more be with Joseph, for his hour had come to die: but he left his son without anxiety, for he said with confidence, "God shall be with you." God's Enemies Shall Bow

The options shall know that I am the Lord. (Exodus 7:5) The ungodly world is hard to teach. When His judgments thunder ... Read More

God's High Places

I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. (Psalm 91:14) Does the Lord say this to me? Yes, if I have known His name. Blessed be the Lord, I am no stranger to Him. God's Hornets

And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee. (Exodus 23:28) What the hornets were we need not consider. They were God's own army which He sent before His people to sting their enemies and render Israel's conquest easy. Our G... Read More

God's Promise Keeps

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. (Ecclesiastes 11:1) We must not expect to see an immediate reward for all the good we do; nor must we always confine our efforts to places and persons which seem likely to yield us a recompense for our labors. The Egyptian casts... Read More

God's Treasury

The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure. (Deuteronomy 28:12) This refers first to the rain. The Lord will give this in its season. God, even our own God

It is strange how little use we make of the spiritual blessings which God gives us, but it is stranger still how little use we make of God Himself. Though He is "our own God," we apply ourselves but little to Him, and ask but little of Him. How seldom do we ask counsel at the hands of the Lord! How ... Read More

God, that comforteth those that are cast down

And who comforteth like Him? Go to some poor, melancholy, distressed child of God; tell him sweet promises, and whisper in his ear choice words of comfort; he is like the deaf adder, he listens not to the voice of the charmer, charm he never so wisely. He is drinking gall and wormwood, and comfort h... Read More

Grace Must Change Us

...grace must make us into silver or into golden vessels, or the Master cannot himself use us, nor can our use in the church ever be to honor.
