David Wilkerson is an American Christian evangelist, most well-known for his book The Cross and the Switchblade. He is also the founder of Times Square Church in New York, an interdenominational church.

Wilkerson is well-known for these early years of his ministry to young drug addicts and gang members in New York City in the 1950s and 1960s. He co-authored a book about his work with the New York drug addicts, The Cross and the Switchblade, which became a best-seller, selling over 50 million copies in over thirty languages since it was published in 1963. The book was included among the 100 most important Christian books of the 20th century.

For over four decades, Wilkerson's ministry has included preaching, teaching and writing. He has authored over 30 books.

David Wilkerson is the founder and president of World Challenge, Inc., a nonprofit organization incorporated on September 22, 1971. Reverend Wilkerson, the author of over thirty inspirational books, is perhaps best known for his early days of ministry to young drug addicts and gang members in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. His story is told in The Cross and the Switchblade, a book he co-authored which became a best-seller. (The story has been read by over 50 million people in some thirty languages and 150 countries since 1963. In 1969, a motion picture of the same title was released.)

For over four decades, Reverend Wilkerson's evangelistic ministry has included preaching, teaching and writing. Throughout that time a distinctive characteristic of his work has been his direct efforts to reach the neediest members of the population with help for both body and soul. Even now, the almost 70 year-old minister often goes out alone or sometimes with an assistant to walk through the streets of New York City, along Broadway and Eighth Avenue or down 42nd Street and nearby "Crack Alley" on 41st Street. His mission is always to seek out the lost, the disoriented, and the addicted , to tell them of the power of the risen Christ to set them free.

David Wilkerson, born in Hammond, Indiana on May 19, 1931, was married in 1953 to Gwen Carosso. The Wilkersons' two sons are ministers, and their two daughters are married to ministers. They have 11 grandchildren. The Wilkersons served small pastorates in Scottsdale and Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, until Reverend Wilkerson saw a photograph in Life magazine of several New York City teenagers charged with murder. Moved with compassion he was drawn to the city in February 1959. It was at that time he began his street ministry to what one writer called "desperate, bewildered, addicted, often violent youth.

OUR MERCIFUL HIGH PRIEST

Beloved, it does not matter what you are going through. Jesus has walked in your shoes and that is what makes Him a merciful High Priest. You do not have to tell Him all your pain. He knows all about it because He has felt it Himself. "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the ... Read More

OUR MINISTRY

We all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18). What does it mean to behold the Lord’s glory? Paul is speaking here of devoted, focused worship. It’s time that’s given to God simply to behold him. And the apostle quickly adds, “Therefore seeing we have thi... Read More

Our Present Fears

As the world becomes increasingly violent, decadent, and uncertain, some Christians struggle to keep fear out of their hearts. They sense intuitively that conditions in the world are disintegrating, and some kind of ominous disaster may be looming on the horizon. As they hear all the terrible report... Read More

Our Security As God’s Children

Jesus called the Holy Spirit “the Comforter.” “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” (John 14:26, KJV, my italics). It is one thing to know the Holy Spiri... Read More

OUR SHEPHERD STILL LOVES THR STRAYS

Our great shepherd loves every sheep who has gone astray because of testings, trials, hurts and wounds. We never dare to accuse our shepherd of abandoning us. He still walks beside us and watches over us at all times. Right now you may be waging a losing war against some kind of temptation. Whatever... Read More

OUT OF PATIENCE

Israel refused to believe God's message about how precious they were in his eyes. Instead, they preferred to focus on their condition — their problems, weaknesses and inabilities — and they gave in to their fears. After a time, God ran out of patience with them, saying to Moses: "How long will this ... Read More

OUT OF THE ABUNDANCE OF THE HEART

Whenever I said something naughty as a child, my mother washed out my mouth with soap. But it was not my mouth that needed cleansing, it was my heart! You see, your tongue speaks only what is in your heart. Those are the very words of our Lord Jesus Christ and He says that loose, careless, evil talk... Read More

Out of the Darkest Times

The prophet Isaiah warns us that in the last days God is going to “turn the world upside down.” He declares, “Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down” (Isaiah 24:1, KJV). According to this prophecy, sudden judgment is coming upon the earth and it will... Read More

OUT OF THE PAW OF THE LION

It is for our own benefit that God tells us to remember. The memory of our past deliverances helps to increase our faith for what we are going through right now. Are you facing a crisis? “Every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell” (Matthew 7:26-27). Overcoming Seeds of Doubt

John the Baptist was a man of the Word. He had spent his entire life studying the Scriptures in solitude and meditating on the law. He had pointed to Jesus and declared, “Behold, the Lamb of God” (John 1:29). He had seen the Holy Spirit descend on Christ as a dove and heard the Father’s voice declar... Read More

PAID IN FULL

Once a year, the high priest went into the Holy of Holies to make atonement for Israel's sins. The priest then removed some coals from the a... Read More

PAUL’S SPIRIT WAS STIRRED

When the apostle Paul looked out at the idolatrous multitudes in Athens, his spirit was moved (see Acts 17:16). Peace And Safety

There is one thing I dread above all others and that is that I would drift away from Christ. I shudder at the notion that I would become slothful, spiritually neglectful, caught up in prayerlessness, and go for days without seeking God’s Word. PEACE AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

On whom does Jesus bestow his peace? You may think, “I’m not worthy of living in Christ’s peace. I have too many struggles in my life. My faith is so weak.” You would do well to consider the men to whom Jesus first gave his peace. None of them was worthy, and none had a right to it. Think about Pete... Read More

Peace With God

Jesus died on the cross to purchase peace with God for me—and he’s in heaven now to maintain that peace, for me and in me. PEOPLE GRACE

God often uses angels to minister to people. But mostly, he uses his own caring people to dispense his grace. This is one reason we’re made partakers of his grace: to become channels of it. We are meant to dispense it to others. I call this “people grace.” “Unto every one of us is given grace accord... Read More

PERFECT PEACE

In the time of panic, God’s trusting people will be blessed with perfect peace.
