David Wilkerson is an American Christian evangelist, most well-known for his book The Cross and the Switchblade. He is also the founder of Times Square Church in New York, an interdenominational church.

Wilkerson is well-known for these early years of his ministry to young drug addicts and gang members in New York City in the 1950s and 1960s. He co-authored a book about his work with the New York drug addicts, The Cross and the Switchblade, which became a best-seller, selling over 50 million copies in over thirty languages since it was published in 1963. The book was included among the 100 most important Christian books of the 20th century.

For over four decades, Wilkerson's ministry has included preaching, teaching and writing. He has authored over 30 books.

David Wilkerson is the founder and president of World Challenge, Inc., a nonprofit organization incorporated on September 22, 1971. Reverend Wilkerson, the author of over thirty inspirational books, is perhaps best known for his early days of ministry to young drug addicts and gang members in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. His story is told in The Cross and the Switchblade, a book he co-authored which became a best-seller. (The story has been read by over 50 million people in some thirty languages and 150 countries since 1963. In 1969, a motion picture of the same title was released.)

For over four decades, Reverend Wilkerson's evangelistic ministry has included preaching, teaching and writing. Throughout that time a distinctive characteristic of his work has been his direct efforts to reach the neediest members of the population with help for both body and soul. Even now, the almost 70 year-old minister often goes out alone or sometimes with an assistant to walk through the streets of New York City, along Broadway and Eighth Avenue or down 42nd Street and nearby "Crack Alley" on 41st Street. His mission is always to seek out the lost, the disoriented, and the addicted , to tell them of the power of the risen Christ to set them free.

David Wilkerson, born in Hammond, Indiana on May 19, 1931, was married in 1953 to Gwen Carosso. The Wilkersons' two sons are ministers, and their two daughters are married to ministers. They have 11 grandchildren. The Wilkersons served small pastorates in Scottsdale and Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, until Reverend Wilkerson saw a photograph in Life magazine of several New York City teenagers charged with murder. Moved with compassion he was drawn to the city in February 1959. It was at that time he began his street ministry to what one writer called "desperate, bewildered, addicted, often violent youth.

THE BLOOD OF JESUS

Most Christians know about the blood Jesus shed for us. When Christ lifted the cup at the last Passover, He said, "This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you" (Luke 22:20). We memorialize His sacrifice every time we have communion. But that is the limit of most Christians' know... Read More

THE BODY OF CHRIST

The apostle Paul instructs us, “Ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular” (1 Corinthians 12:27). Then he says more specifically, “As the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members…being many, are one body: so also is Christ” (12:14). Paul is telling us, “Take a look at your ... THE BOLDNESS OF A LION

Jesus Christ has left me an inheritance and I claim it as mine. Scripture says, "The righteous are bold as a lion" (Proverbs 28:1). If you can accept this truth of the perfect righteousness of Christ, you will have the boldness of a lion. You will never again fear any person or look at someone else'... Read More

THE BOUNTIFUL SERVANT!

Recently I went to the Lord in prayer very heavyhearted, laden down with many cares. I began to plead my case before Him: “Oh, Lord, I’ve never been so weary in all my life. I can hardly go on!” Then I began to weep. I was so exhausted the tears literally burst out of me. As I lay crying, I thought,... Read More

The Breaking Point

Growing numbers of Christians are at the breaking point. Young people, especially, are giving up in defeat. They feel they cannot live up to the image of a happy-go-lucky, rich, successful, always positive-thinking Christian. Their world is not that idealistic. They live with intense peer pressure, ... THE BRIDE OF CHRIST

What would a man think if his bride-to-be invited him to her house, sat him in the living room and then went her way? While he waits, she works in the kitchen, dusts the furniture, mops the floors—and never says a word to him! Jesus endures the same pain any man would feel if his beloved continually... Read More

The Bridge Between Earth and Heaven

As the shepherds gazed on the Babe in the manger, they saw a Savior who would redeem all of humankind. When the wise men beheld him, they saw a King who would conquer death. And when the prophets looked ahead, they saw an Emancipator who would open prison doors, unlock chains, and set captives free.... Read More

THE BURDEN OF HIDDEN SIN

The burden of hidden sin King David carried for an entire year cost him dearly. It broke his health, plagued his mind and wounded his spirit. It created havoc in his home, disillusionment in God's people, mockery among the godless. Finally, he cried out, "I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continu... Read More

THE CHURCH AT EPHESUS

The Christians at Ephesus walked closely with the Lord. As I read through Paul's letter to the Ephesians, I am amazed at the gospel these people heard and lived. In fact, Paul compliments them at length. He addresses them as, "The faithful in Christ Jesus . . . blessed . . . with all spiritual bless... Read More

THE COMING STORM

When a sleeping child must be awakened, a loving parent takes him by the shoulders and gently shakes him. If the child doesn't wake up immediately, the shaking becomes a bit firmer. The parent insists, because he knows the child will suffer if he doesn't wake up on time. That is precisely what God i... Read More

The Complete Work of Faith

The devil loves to tell you that you’re no good, useless, weak. He tells you that you are a total failure and will never measure up to God’s standard. THE CONFRONTATION OF THE CROSS

Let me show you what I mean by the confrontation of the cross. Consider a man who is fed up with his sinful habit yet he continually falls deeper into its clutches. He has promised himself a hundred times he will never do it again — and, for a while, he submerges the temptation and enjoys a measure ... Read More

THE CRISIS AT THE RED SEA

The Old Testament lists many times of testing for God's people. Perhaps the greatest example was the crisis at the Red Sea. This crisis was completely arranged by God, set up by His very own commands to Israel. Scripture says that it was God who hardened Pharaoh's heart, caused the Egyptians to purs... Read More

The Danger in Worldliness

Many voices in the church today say Christians must show a new kind of love. They are talking about a love in which biblical truth must bend with the times. According to their gospel, no personal changes are necessary when one accepts Christ. Indeed, no repentance is needed. Rather, the goal in pres... Read More

Christians seem to have a hard time praying. They spend their days worrying, fretting, because they don’t have an answer to their problems.
