Why Sign the Pledge?

The feeling among Christians against strong drink is growing. By the efforts and self-sacrifice of tens of thousands, a strong public sentiment can be formed, like a mighty breakwater. An arrest may be placed on the onward march of drunkenness, and many a bark, battered by the fury of Passion and Se... Read More

WORK OUT WHAT GOD WORKS IN

Now, I come to my next point. When God works in, you must work out. " Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is GOD that worketh in you." You must work out what God works in, and you must do it with fear and trembling. Let me explain. Suppose a great artist is training a young s... Read More

Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled. 2 Kings iii. 17. THIS is God's way of fulfilling the desire of them that fear Him. We like to see the clouds blown forward through the sky, and hear the moan of the rising wind; in other words, we like to see God's gi... Read More

Yet doth He devise means that his banished be not expelled from Him. 2 Sam. xiv. 14. THE means that David devised were really inadequate. Yet shall the righteous hold on his way.

Yet shall the righteous hold on his way. Job xvii. 9 (R.V.). WHEN the real life of God enters the soul, it persists there. Genuine religion is shown by its power of persistence. Anything short of a Godgiven faith will sooner or later fail. It may run well for a time, but its pace will inevitably sla... Read More

YOU HAVE MISSED IT

You always will that way. It is inside. It is in the Holy Ghost. It is in Christ. Heaven is there. It is there for all. But believe me, you cannot get it unless you take the preparatory step. Therefore you must get alone as I did sixteen years ago; you must kneel down before Christ and say: "Christ,... Read More

"A CASTAWAY"--IN WHAT SENSE?

Is it to be supposed for a moment that the Apostle thought that when once the believer has fled to Christ he can be cast out into the outer darkness where there is weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth? Is it possible for a limb to be torn from the mystical body of Christ, for a jewel to be sn... Read More

Once Pagannini, standing before a great audience, broke string after string in his violin, until only one was left. He held up his violin, and said: "One string and Pagannini." Meyer, F.B. "The Blessed Life"

THE BLESSED LIFE by F. B. Meyer There is a Christian life which, on comparison with that experienced by the majority of Christians, is as summer to winter; or, as the mature fruitfulness of a golden autumn to the struggling promise of a cold and late spring. And the blessedness of this blessed life ... Read More
