May 30. Jesus Always Answers

"Calling two of them, John sent them to the Lord to ask: Are you the one who was to come — or should we expect someone else?" "Then Jesus answered" Luke 7:18-22 John was perplexed, and sent from his prison to ask Jesus if He were indeed the promised Messiah. Jesus patiently answered the messengers. ... Read More

May 31. Footprints of Christ

"Go and report to John the things you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news." Luke 7:22 John wanted to know whether Jesus really was the Messiah or not. Jesus did... Read More

May 4. Heaven Brought to Us

"May Your kingdom come." Matthew 6:10 This is a very comprehensive prayer. It pleads for . . . the extension of God's spiritual realm in this world, His power over men's hearts and lives, the subjugation of earth's kingdoms to His sway. It is a prayer that men may put away their sins and amend their... Read More

May 5. Doing the Will of God

"May Your will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven." Matthew 6:10 Many people always quote this petition as if it meant only submission to some painful providence. They suppose it refers only to losing friends or money, or being sick or in trouble — but this is only a little part of its meaning. It... Read More

May 6. Day by Day

"Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11 This seems a very small thing to ask — only bread for a day. Why are we not taught to pray for bread enough to last a week, or a month, or a year? For one thing, Jesus wanted to teach us the lesson of continual dependence. He taught us to come each mo... Read More

May 7. A Forgiving Spirit

"Forgive us our sins — as we have forgiven those who sin against us." Matthew 6:12 The first part of this petition, "forgive us our sins" is not so hard to say. Most people are willing to confess, at least in a general way — that they have sinned. But the second part is harder to repeat: "as we have... Read More

May 8. Enduring Temptation

"Lead us not into temptation — but deliver us from evil." Matthew 6:11 It is impossible to live in this world — and escape temptation. In olden times, Catholic monks fled away from active life and from human companionships, hoping thus to evade enticement to evil. But they were not at all successful... Read More

May 9. The Love of Money

"No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one — and love the other; you will be devoted to one — and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Mammon!" Matthew 6:24 We had better look very carefully into the meaning of these words, remembering that it was our blessed Lord who spoke the... Read More

More than Food

The most important thing about us, is not our condition or our circumstances — but our life itself. Experiences are only incidents; the reality in all of us is ourselves. The house is not the family. The rough weather may tear away the roof, or fire may destroy the building; but the family life is n... Read More

Mutual Forbearance

Among all Christian duties, there are few that touch life at more points than the duty of mutual forbearance, and there are few that, in the observance or the breach, have more to do with the happiness or the unhappiness of life. We cannot live our lives solitarily. We are made to be social beings. ... Read More

Nevertheless Afterward

Things are not finished—as we see them today. Tomorrow they will appear larger, greater. The bud you see one morning in the garden—will be a full-blown rose in a little while. The brown seed you dropped in your window-box, will be a beautiful plant by and by. Wherever there is life—there is growth. ... Read More

Night, and Jesus Absent

A whole picture lies in a sentence, or part of a sentence. Thus John describes a scene on the Sea of Galilee, "It was now dark--and Jesus had not yet come to them." The disciples had been sent out on the sea alone. Evening was drawing on. Moreover, a storm was gathering, adding to their anxieties an... Read More

No True Work Is Vain

No true work for God ever fails. Was there ever in this world such other apparent failure as there was in the life of Jesus, at the close of the day he died? Nothing seemed to be left. The Cross had buried in black floods of shame all that was beautiful and worthwhile in that blessed life. Even the ... Read More

Not to Be Ministered Unto

There are many people who want to be useful, who want to live to help others—who find insuperable obstacles in the way. There are some to whom they find it quite easy to minister—to those of lovely character, to those who are their friends and who readily reciprocate any favors shown to them. But it... Read More

November 10. The Man of Sorrows

"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death!" Matthew 26:38 We ought often to sit down with our Lord in the garden of Gethsemane — and look upon Him while He suffers.
