John Nelson Darby

John Nelson Darby (1800 - 1882)

was an Anglo-Irish Bible teacher, one of the influential figures among the original Plymouth Brethren and the founder of the Exclusive Brethren. He is considered to be the father of modern Dispensationalism and Futurism ("the Rapture" in the English vernacular). Pre-tribulation rapture theology was popularized extensively in the 1830s by John Nelson Darby and the Plymouth Brethren, and further popularized in the United States in the early 20th century by the wide circulation of the Scofield Reference Bible.

He produced a translation of the Bible based on the Hebrew and Greek texts called The Holy Scriptures: A New Translation from the Original Languages by J. N. Darby. Darby traveled widely in Europe and Britain in the 1830s and 1840s, and established many Brethren assemblies. He gave 11 significant lectures in Geneva in 1840 on the hope of the church (L'attente actuelle de l'église). These established his reputation as a leading interpreter of biblical prophecy.

John Nelson Darby graduated Trinity College, Dublin, in 1819 and was called to the Irish bar about 1825; but soon gave up law practice, took orders, and served a curacy in Wicklow until, in 1827, doubts as to the Scriptural authority for church establishments led him to leave the institutional church altogether and meet with a company of like-minded persons in Dublin.

He was also a Bible Commentator. He declined however to contribute to the compilation of the Revised Version of the King James Bible.

Letter: 61E 126 G V Wigram, Montpellier, January 11th, 1848

p126 [To the same.] Dearest G V Wigram, - I write a line just to say I am arrived here, but before I can pretend to give much detail on the state of things. I trust the Lord will bless the work, but most of it has to be done here; they are slow, but there is good, which encourages. It appears that i... Read More

p16 BELOVED BROTHER AND BRETHREN, - I waited awhile to write with an object which has partly indeed been attained, but not attained with the same comfort I might have desired, yet still, with the comfort of seeing one's way rather. p19 VERY DEAR BROTHER [J L Harris], - You might think I was a very unfaithful fulfiller of my purpose of writing, but indeed it was much very anxious trouble that came upon me in service, besides my ordinary labour, that precluded me a good deal from carrying my intention into effect, in which I wou... p27 Dear Mrs. Ord, - With regard to the question of Mr. - 's letter on 1 Corinthians 15:28, I have not myself any difficulty. Letters on certain points in Romanism

1. Rule of Faith. Power in the church is neither more nor less than that of the Holy Ghost. There may be added at the beginning the apostles, as constituted of the Lord Jesus and having directions from Him. But now this is simply the working of the Holy Ghost in the church. This may be in an individ... Read More

Liberality of Heart

{Christian Friend 1893, pages 85-7.} In Num. 6 we have had the Nazarite, entire separation from evil, a separation more of constraint, and therefore in one sense painful; but in this chapter another principle is brought out - voluntary devotedness to God, called liberality of heart. Blessings were t... Read More

LIFE IN RESURRECTION COLOSSIANS 3 : 1-4 THE great principle upon which a Christian stands is as to what is his life, and from whence it flows. Light, Love and Life

Every one who has any amount of spiritual intelligence remarks the difference between this and the three preceding Gospels. They present Christ, be it as Son of David, or Messiah, or Servant, or Son of Man, as may suit the individual case, and as such to be received by men; but John speaks of the Li... Read More

Like Christ in Glory

(Words in Season Vol. 7, 1893, page 242.) I am going to be like Christ in glory; then I must be as like Him now as ever I can be; of course we shall all fail, but we are to have our hearts full of it. Remember this, that the place you are in is that of the epistle of Christ. We are set for this, tha... Read More

THE LIVING WATER JOHN 7 : 37-39 In order fully to understand the meaning of this scripture, and the circumstance for which this feast, to which Jesus went up, is a type, we must, in the first place, see the way in which He is presented to us in Scripture-at present as an absent Lord. Lost or Saved Acts 26

The peculiarity of the gospel is its activity towards man - dealing with individuals to whom it is addressed, and not merely propagating opinions. It is quite intelligible that a person may like to spread his opinions, but he will soon get tired of it. The gospel deals with man individually, and goe... Read More

Lot's Choice: a word on Present Advantage Genesis 19

There is much profitable instruction in tracing, in contrast, the characters of Lot and Abram. Love is of God," and "God is love." 1 John 4:7-21.

The great subject of this epistle is net the grace manifested towards us as sinners, dealing with us as such, and justifying us; but another side of Christianity, and that is, the life of Christ, "That eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us," that is, in us; and then "wh... Luke 1

The Saviour is presented to us in Luke in His character as Son of man, displaying the power of Jehovah in grace in the midst of men. The last section of this gospel (chap. 10:38; 11) shewed the two great means of blessing to the soul - namely the word of God and prayer, the precious gift of God, and the true need of man in the presence of a rejected Messiah.
