John Nelson Darby

John Nelson Darby (1800 - 1882)

was an Anglo-Irish Bible teacher, one of the influential figures among the original Plymouth Brethren and the founder of the Exclusive Brethren. He is considered to be the father of modern Dispensationalism and Futurism ("the Rapture" in the English vernacular). Pre-tribulation rapture theology was popularized extensively in the 1830s by John Nelson Darby and the Plymouth Brethren, and further popularized in the United States in the early 20th century by the wide circulation of the Scofield Reference Bible.

He produced a translation of the Bible based on the Hebrew and Greek texts called The Holy Scriptures: A New Translation from the Original Languages by J. N. Darby. Darby traveled widely in Europe and Britain in the 1830s and 1840s, and established many Brethren assemblies. He gave 11 significant lectures in Geneva in 1840 on the hope of the church (L'attente actuelle de l'église). These established his reputation as a leading interpreter of biblical prophecy.

John Nelson Darby graduated Trinity College, Dublin, in 1819 and was called to the Irish bar about 1825; but soon gave up law practice, took orders, and served a curacy in Wicklow until, in 1827, doubts as to the Scriptural authority for church establishments led him to leave the institutional church altogether and meet with a company of like-minded persons in Dublin.

He was also a Bible Commentator. He declined however to contribute to the compilation of the Revised Version of the King James Bible.

The Church, What Is It?

THE CHURCH-WHAT IS IT? HER POWER, HOPES, CALLING, PRESENT POSITION, AND OCCUPATION It is a solemn thing when we come to think what the church really is.* It is all blessed when we think of her privileges ; but looking at her as Christ's representative on earth is most solemn-an " epistle of Christ."... The Church- God's Habitation Through the Spirit

THE CHURCH, AN HABITATION OF GOD THROUGH THE SPIRIT EPHESIANS 2 There are two great ideas in this epistle as regards the saints. The grand thought all through it is the grace of God towards them ; but, as regards the saints, there are these two ideals about the church : firstly, its hopes ; secondly... Read More

The Cleansing of the Leper Leviticus 14:10-20

In this passage we find the ceremony, according to the law, for the cleansing of the leper - a figure of the cleansing which Christ has accomplished for us, for leprosy is a type of sin. There is a distinction to be made between the purification of the leper and that of the priest. There were but th... Read More

The Closing Days of Christendom

I have just been thinking how the great apostate systems, whether civil or ecclesiastical, are destined to advance in strength and magnificence, as their day of doom and judgment approaches. Witness the condition of the WOMAN in Revelation 18, and that of the BEAST in Revelation 18 and 19. And I ask... Read More

The Coming of the Lord Luke 12

(Words of Faith, Vol. 3, 1884, page 141.) My purpose this evening is to speak of the coming of the Lord, but not in order to prove it from scripture, but to shew how it is interwoven with the whole fabric of christian thought, so that if you take it out you rend the whole fabric to pieces. I do not ... Read More

The Costliness and Blessed Self-hiding of the Love of Christ

(Words in Season, Vol. 4, 1890, page 36.) The source of the glory which will be displayed is more blessed than the manifestation of it. It is blessed to be manifested in favour. Why? Because the favour of the person is precious to me. In John 17:23, the Lord prays "that the world may know that Thou ... Read More

The Counsel of Peace

"THE COUNSEL OF PEACE" Zechariah 6 : 13 This chapter, written after the return of the Jews from Babylon, and when they were seeking to rebuild the temple, was intended to encourage them in that work. It speaks therefore of Joshua, Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah (those who had come from Babylon), by name. ... Read More

The Cross

(Words of Faith, Vol. 3, 1884, page 244.) I see how, in the cross, the whole question of good and evil was brought to an issue in every way. First, it was the complete display of man's enmity against God - the contemptuous rejection, alas! of God - come in love, for His love He had "hatred;" and in ... Read More

The Day of Atonement Leviticus 16

Provision being made for such defilements of the people as allowed of it, we have the revelation of the general provision for the purification of the sanctuary which was in the midst of a people who defiled it, and for the atonement of the sins of the people themselves. In general, there are two gre... Read More

The Descent of the Holy Ghost

The Bible Herald, 1879, pp. 156[?]. The descent of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost characterizes the interval between the ascension of the Lord to the right hand of God, that He might take His place of Head over all things to the Church which is His body, and His coming again to receive her to Himself. ... The Divine Exodus Exodus 15

The British Herald, 1875, pp. 109-112. In a certain sense the Red Sea had closed the whole history, if you take it in itself as to Egypt (it begins the life in another sense); but it closed the history by redemption and judgment (for the Egyptians were judged), for death which was salvation to Israe... The Epistle to the Ephesians

<35009E> 131 Ephesians 1 Here we have the thought of God about us - all that there is of blessing in Him for us. Angels, principalities, and powers, will learn through us the manifold wisdom of God. Then He unfolds it all. First our calling, then God's purpose as to Christ - His place then our inher... Read More

The Epistle to the Philippians

In Philippians we get the experience of the Christian, but no allusion to sin. All the out-goings of the heart - Christ. There is no "if" as to being in Christ, but plenty of "ifs" the moment we get Christ in us. Caleb and Joshua were sustained as examples of the power of faith in the wilderness; th... Read More

The Eternal Sonship of Christ

Though I have ever held this verse, to say the least, to be very doubtful from the course of the meaning, it is not to discuss this at present I write, but another point of importance - the use of the term Son. There are those who, objecting to the term Son as applied to the divinity of our Lord, st... Read More

The Exercises and End of Grace John 20

It is remarkable the instruments God uses to display His grace towards man, and the different exercises of heart persons go through, which prepare them for the service on which they are to be sent. There is a loneliness which may even be occasioned by a man's own folly, in which he finds himself wit... Read More

The Failure of the Flesh

In chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9 we have had the energy of the Spirit of God in us while passing through the wilderness, and in the tenth the ark going before the children of Israel to seek out a place of rest for them - the only journey of which the Lord in this way was the conductor. Jude 3 It is a great thing for us, beloved friends, in all our path to know where we are, and then to know the mind of God, not only as to where we are, but as to our place in the path in which we find ourselves. The Faithfulness of God seen in His ways with Balaam

It was the object of the enemy to hinder God's people from the enjoyment of the land God had promised to bring them into. It was not now a question of getting out of Egypt. This chapter presents an object before our souls so as to give us our portion in Christ - a portion in the Father's house; and secondly how we get into this place. The Feasts Leviticus 23

I apprehend that these feasts must be taken to apply entirely to that which is earthly. Other knowledge may enable us to carry our eyes onward to the results of what is here taught, which have their place in the heavenlies; but as addressed to the Jews, they cannot historically, I conceive, be taken...
