T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

Seeking The Glory Of Christ As Son Of God

God… hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in His son, Whom He appointed Heir of all things (Heb. 1:1-2; A.R.V.). … the kingdom of His Son… Who is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn of all creation; for in Him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visib... Service and Sovereignty

Reading: Jeremiah 1:1-12 Our meditation is to be on the matter of service and sovereignty, and I think I can best say what is on my heart by dividing that in this way - (1) The Service, (2) The Servant, (3) The Sovereignty. The Service First, then, the service. When we come to consider any of the gr... Read More

Set "For a Sign"

"Say ye, I am your sign." - Ez. 12:11. The mental conception of consecration has come to mean to be blessed and to be made a blessing. That is not a true conception if just left there. These passages, which we have read (see below) contain a proposition which is the central and basic principle of co... Read More

Significant Salutations

Reading: Romans 16 This is a chapter which I expect you do not often read. The letter proper seems to end with the "Amen" of 15:33, and it is easy to regard the final chapter as of little importance. But even though it may be a struggle to read it, I suggest that the effort is well worth making. Lik... Read More

Simon Peter

"Go tell his disciples, and Peter" (Mark 16:7). "He appeared to Cephas" (1 Corinthians 15:5) In our consideration of what the Resurrection of Jesus meant in representative cases, we come next to Simon Peter There are two things that meet us immediately we think of Peter. One is, how very human he is... Read More

Simulation - Exaggeration - Predomination

Bible interpreters have been convinced that the words ostensibly addressed to "the king of Babylon" in Isaiah 14 have a larger context and can only be exhausted if seen to refer to some erstwhile angelic being. This conviction is strongly supported by other statements and allusions in different part... Read More

Some Lessons from Zacharias

Reading: Luke 1:5-25,57-67. The Lord is ever desirous of making His people know His real purpose in fulness concerning them. We need to come to a very settled position on this matter. It is not a question of how the Lord's people may be at any given time. It may be that, as we have read here concern... Read More

Some Mental Difficulties in Prayer

Having considered the five phases of prayer, namely, communion, submission, petition, co-operation and conflict, we shall now go on a little further to consider some of the problems which are related to prayer. As we have said, very often an undefined sense of contradiction or uncertainty in the bac... Read More

Some Principles of the House of God (2 Chronicles 3:1)

Reading: Psalm 132 “Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord appeared unto David his father, which he made ready in the place that David had appointed, in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite” 2 Chron 3:1 There is much related Scripture whic... Some Qualifications Basic to Service

Qualifications Not Natural but Spiritual Timothy was a young man - it would seem that he was little more than a boy - when Paul first found him. In addition, he was of a very timid and shrinking disposition and temperament - anything but self-assertive and self-sufficient; he was one who could easil... Read More

Some Titles as Evidence of the Change

The point at which we have now arrived is that, in the constituting of the spiritual Israel, God is following the same line as He took with the earthly Israel, but with one great difference - with the earthly He followed temporal lines, but with the heavenly He is following spiritual lines. However,... Read More

Spiritual Enlargement Unto the Maintaining of the Testimony of Jesus

I want to take you back to the point where Elijah cast his mantle upon Elisha, which meant that Elisha was called, apprehended for that ministry of succeeding his master after the master had gone up to heaven. Then there were those journeys of the two, the testing out of Elisha, from Gilgal to Bethe... Read More

Spiritual Enlightenment

When we come to this point in the Gospel we mark a further step in the apprehension of Christ. You will see how, in what seems to be a very matter-of-fact way, the narrative goes on - "And as he passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth." We have frequently observed, that the things which occurre... Read More

Spiritual Israel

We are seeking to see what came in with the day of Pentecost, that is, the deeper and fuller meaning of what was introduced into this world on that day. We have been saying that it did mark a new day in this world's history. When we say 'day' we mean 'age,' a 'dispensation.' That is a big and diffic... Read More

Spiritual Understanding (Matthew 13)

Reading: Matthew 13:1-9, 11, 14-15, 19, 23, 51 You will probably note that one word occurs in all these varied verses - the word 'understanding' in its different forms. I have recently been very much impressed with the necessity for spiritual understanding. This parable is, I expect, as familiar to ... Read More

Spirituality: The Key to all That is of God

A spiritual state is the key to all that is of God. Spirituality is the door, and the key to the door, beyond which lies everything that relates to God.
