T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

More of Christ: From "The Stewardship of the Mystery" by T. Austin Sparks

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

The Answer To Disillusionment

"While ye have the light, believe on the light, that ye may become sons of light. These things spake Jesus, and he departed and hid himself from them" (or: "was hidden from them"). "But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they believed not on him: that the word of Isaiah the prophet mi... Read More

The Apocalyptic Method - A Challenge to Christian

"The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto Him, to shew unto His servants things which must shortly come to pass; and He sent and signified it by His angel unto His servant John" (Rev. 1:1). Yes, we are in the Book of the Revelation, the most controversial book in the Bible. This book has ... Read More

The Apostle Paul

"Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ”(1 Cor. 11:1). When a man says such a thing as this he assumes a very heavy responsibility. He involves Christ in his conduct, and for anyone to take his advice and then go wrong, would mean that Christ would be implicated in the error. The would-b... Read More

The Appeal of God's Full Thought

Reading: 1 Cor. 1:1-10. Two things remain to be said about this introductory section to this letter. One is that it represents the position of the Lord’s people in Christ. Quite clearly all that is said there does not directly apply, so far as conditions were concerned, to the whole Corinthian assem... Read More

The Approaching Great Shaking

As the writer of this letter (to the "Hebrews") approaches its conclusion; after repeatedly giving great and terrible warnings as to the peril of failure to apprehend the full purpose and meaning of God in Christ, he gathers all up into a prophetic forecast which is itself the inclusive warning. "He... Read More

The Ark of Glory

Reading: 1 Samuel 4:10-11, 17-22. "And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the adversary's hand" (Psalm 78:61). We have been occupied with the greatness and glory of Jesus Christ as represented in the ark of the testimony. Amongst the various titles of this ark we noted that on... Read More

The Ark of the Testimony

"Who bare witness of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ" (Revelation 1:2). The Authority is Invested in the Man on the Throne

As you know, this first section in chapters one through three deals with the preparation of the Lord's servant for his ministry. So far we have considered firstly the prophet in himself and then the opened heaven, and then we have gone on with the visions of God. And we still have a little to say ab... Read More

The Basis Of Oneness

Now, seeing that it is set forth as being so, that we are together, we want to see something more of the ground of this oneness. I think perhaps we could be helped most by reminding ourselves of the 23rd chapter of Leviticus, the chapter which contains the establishing of the Feasts of the Lord. Now... Read More

The Battleground of the Soul (Matthew 16:13-25)

Reading: Matt. 16:13-25; Luke 22:31-34. "Blessed art thou, Simon... My Father (hath revealed it unto thee)" (Matt. 16:17). "He... said unto Peter, Get thee behind Me, Satan" (Matt. 16:23). "Simon... Satan asked to have you... but I made supplication for thee" (Luke 22:31-32; A.S.V.). We have before ... Read More

The Beginning of a New Humanity

Referring back to our original definition and reminding ourselves that the word 'horizon' is the English form of the Greek word horizo, and that it is applied to Christ twice in the book of the 'Acts' (10:42, 17:31), its definite meaning being: 'to mark out or off': horizon is the full range of visi... The Blessedness of the Unoffended

The Body of Christ: Its Heavenly Aspect

We are going, as the Lord enables us, to meditate afresh on the Body of Christ. The Burden of the Valley of Vision (Isaiah 22:1)

Reading: Isaiah 22:1 The word ''burden'' here just does mean a load or weight, as much as a man can carry.
