T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

More of Christ: From "The Stewardship of the Mystery" by T. Austin Sparks

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

The Superiority of the New Position

We are now going to concentrate upon one aspect of the great transition: the superiority of the heavenly Israel to the earthly. The writer of this Letter, whoever he was, was giving himself wholly to the immense superiority of what had come in with this dispensation. It was as though he said to hims... Read More

The Superiority of the New Position (continued)

In our last message we only made a beginning with this matter - and when we say 'we made a beginning' as we come almost to the end of the Conference, it is quite evident that we are going to have twelve basketfuls over when we have finished! We really have not sounded the full depth of this Letter t... Read More

The Supernatural Birth and Works of Christ

The Bible is a record of the long history of the conflict between the natural and the supernatural. That will sound strange to many ears because the element of conflict is so often ruled out by the explanation or excuse: 'Well, it is only natural.' 'It is just human nature.' 'You cannot go against n... Read More

The Supernatural Death and Resurrection of Christ

From the supernatural birth and works of the Redeemer we move on to The Supernatural Death of Christ There has been a big move in recent times from that 'New Theology' (so-called) which pronounced the death of Jesus a death just like that of any other martyred hero. We remember hearing a prominent p... Read More

The Supreme Importance of a Living and Clear Apprehension of Christ

Reading: 1 Corinthians 3. These words are carefully chosen: the supreme importance of a living and clear apprehension of Christ. If it were necessary to show how supremely important that is, it could be done very easily without going outside of this first letter to the Corinthians; for undoubtedly a... Read More

The Supreme Importance of the Incorruptible

Incorruptible Characteristics of the Life of the Lord Jesus Reading: 2 Timothy 1:8-10 The Lord Jesus was the embodiment of the incorruptible. The Supreme Importance Of The Incorruptible

I would like at the very outset to seek to put into two or three concise statements what I believe to be the Lord's object for this time. In the first place, God is supremely concerned with ultimate and time-outlasting values. Then, He would have those values secured as directly and immediately as p... Read More

The Supreme Vocation (Daniel 10:1-21)

Reading: Daniel 10:1-21 From the tenth chapter of the Book of Daniel I want to take just this fragment from the nineteenth verse: "And he said, 0 man greatly beloved, fear not peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong." The Testimony Of Jesus

We have seen that, at the end of the apostolic age, and with the close of the first Christian century, Christianity had completely changed. It had lost its primal, original character and nature. The Testimony of the Blood (continued)

There is nothing which Satan fears so terribly and contests so fiercely as a true and living testimony concerning the Blood of the Lord Jesus: not a teaching, doctrine, creed or phraseology, but that which is wrought out in the power of the Holy Spirit.
