T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

More of Christ: From "The Stewardship of the Mystery" by T. Austin Sparks

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

The Wondrous Ways of God

From "The Work of the Ministry" Volume 1. "Thy way was in the sea, And thy paths in the great waters, And thy footsteps were not known. Thou leddest thy people like a flock. By the hand of Moses and Aaron" (Psalm 77:19,20) What a strange juxtaposition of similes! It would be difficult to have a grea... Read More

The Word, the Work and the World

(A message given to young Christians in October 1970) From “A Witness and a Testimony”, Vol. 49 No. 5, 1971 I have been wondering if I could define and sum up your conference in three words, and I think I have them: the Word, the Work and the World. We are going to speak a little about these, but fi... Read More

The words once more

The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken – that is, created things – so that what cannot be shaken may remain. (Hebrews 12:27 NIV) In the destruction of Jerusalem – toward which the Letter [to the Hebrews] pointed – the whole earth was shaken so far as Jewry was concerned. T... Read More

The Work and the Workers

When the writer of the letter to the Hebrews had been saying many things, he evidently had a feeling that it all needed to be gathered up into one clear, precise statement, and so he wrote: "Now in the things which we are saying the chief point is this". The margin says, "Now to sum up what we are s... Read More

The World Need: "Life"

Romans 1:1-6. In this matter of the world need, everything can be gathered up in one word, "life." It does not matter where we look we find that that is the need. We have witness borne to that fact in all directions, and we can gather those up into some specific forms of expression. We begin with th... Read More

The "Mystery" Revealed

In the wonder and amazement of this unveiling we must be clear as to its exact nature and meaning. To do this we must put our finger upon key phrases which precisely embody and define it. We have found the statement which gives the ultimate and consummate issue: it is in Ephesians one, verse ten. Ca... Read More

The 'Parchment', the 'Pen', and the Purpose

"For whom he foreknew, he also foreordained to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren" (Romans 8:29). The 'Plus' And 'Other' Of Heaven

Reading: 2 Timothy 1:8-10 The incorruptible characteristic of the life of the Lord Jesus upon which we shall dwell just now - all too insufficiently, I am afraid - is what I will call the 'plus' and 'other' of heaven. That is rather an awkward phrase, I know, but you will understand it better as I g... Read More

This Matter of Christian Unity

“By this shall all men know…” (John 13:35). "That the world may believe…” (John 17:21). Unity as a Priority in Witness Some battles are lost before a blow is struck or a shot fired. Training in the House of God (Genesis 14:14)

"When Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued as far as Dan." Truth in The Inward Parts (Psalm 51:6)

"Behold, Thou desirest truth in the inward parts" (Psalm 51:6). PSALM 51 might well have as its title DE PROFUNDIS. It is here that the Psalmist reaches the deepest depths of sorrow and remorse. The bottom is touched when it is a question of "bloodguiltiness", for, in all the provisions for sin in t... Read More

What Happens When We Become Christians

In these talks, we are seeking to be pre-eminently practical. That is, we are not occupied with the presentation of Christian doctrine in itself. Christian doctrine will be here, but we are not interested in presenting the doctrines of Christianity in the abstract, important as they are. What we are... Read More
