T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

More of Christ: From "The Stewardship of the Mystery" by T. Austin Sparks

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

"This Kingdom is an Everlasting Kingdom

As this is the last meeting of these series this week, it will be necessary for us to do a little reviewing of what has been said. Not very much, but just enough to be able to go on from where we left off last night. But before we come to that I want to take you back to the Old Testament. Those of y... Read More

We are going to read some Scriptures in the Word of God: "And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, 'Saul, Saul, why persecu... Read More

"And when the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it" (Jeremiah 18:4). We are going to consider the next movement into God's Mind as represented by the potter's work but before we come to that I j... Read More

"To Whom is the Arm of the Lord Revealed?" The Cross

Most of us, as the Lord’s people, would probably agree that there is at the present day a very great need for the Lord to show His power. That might be a personal confession: we would each say, individually, ‘There is a great need for the Lord to do something in my life—to do some new thing, some mi... Read More

"We... Beholding... The Lord Are Changed Into the Same Image"

"And when the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it" (Jeremiah 18:4). (So we are occupied at this time with the second vessel being made by the Potter. The first vessel, Israel, was marred and br... Read More

“Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place?” (Ps. 24:3). “And I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on the mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty and four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads. "Worshipping in Spirit and in Truth"

I think it is understood that in these meetings I am not giving formal addresses. I am just seeking to bring you to the foundation principles of the work of God. There is one thing that we must be prepared to recognize and accept. It is this: That before the apostles had finished their work on this ... Read More

'Life... Promised Before Times Eternal'

Our basic passage for these messages is 2 Corinthians 3:3: "...being made manifest that ye are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not in tables of stone, but in tables that are hearts of flesh". We have seen that the Holy Spirit is wr... Read More

‘Woe!’ – ‘Lo!’ – ‘Go!’

Reading: Isaiah 6:1-5; John 12:41; Isaiah 6:6-14. "These things said Isaiah, because he saw his glory; and he spake of him." John was referring to the Lord Jesus - Jehovah of Hosts! We have seen that what took place at the time of Isaiah's vision was related to the entirely new order of things into ... Read More

“The Controversy of Zion”

Dear Lord, in no formal way, no mere custom, but in a very deep and strong consciousness of need, we pray. We must pray. We are this morning allowing ourselves to be put under new responsibility. “Ye Are Come unto Mount Zion”

While we wait upon Thee [on Thee, Lord, we wait] and while we do need Thee to bless us and ask Thee to bless us while we wait on Thee, we would rise even higher and say, Lord, satisfy Thyself. A Good Man in Danger

It was no small thing that Jesus should have said of a man "Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile", thus marking him out as one apart from the majority of his nation, as being more spiritual than fleshly or carnal: a son of Israel rather than of Jacob. Further, it was no small thing that t... Read More

A Heart for God's Testimony

That little romance - the Book of Ruth - stands as a link between the terrible spiritual tragedy - "Judges" - and God's reaction thereto in David. A Man in Christ

"I know a man in Christ" (2 Corinthians 12:2) The object of our consideration is manhood in relation to the Lord's testimony, and for it we take a little phrase used by the apostle Paul about himself: "I knew a man in Christ". To it may be linked a few other simple phrases: "I JESUS have sent my ang... Read More
