T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

The Amen

"These things saith the Amen" (Rev. 3:14). The last message to the Church is from the One who selects for Himself from His many titles and designations the one that embodies everything that is affirmative, positive, and definite. "Amen" is not only an ejaculation or form of assent, it is a Divine ti... Read More

A Very Deep Concern...

The Church of God is passing into, or through, some very big changes, and there is much "overturning, overturning, until he comes whose right it is" (Ezekiel 21:27). While there is very much confusion in every realm, the lines of demarcation and definition are being drawn in Christianity. Categories... Read More

I Will Overturn

"I will overturn, overturn, overturn.... until He come Whose right it is; and I will give it Him" (Ezekiel 21:27). You will see, if you look, that those words have an immediate and a much wider context. Their immediate context is the life-ministry of the prophet. His times were to see the beginning ... Read More

God's Jealousy for Principles

Reading: 1 Sam. 7:1-2; 1 Chron. 13:1-14. Though God has no favourites among men, and is not prejudiced against people as such, yet He is very jealous for principles, and perhaps in the Old Testament there is no incident which more emphatically demonstrates that truth than the one contained in 1 Chro... Spiritual Understanding

Reading: Matthew 13:1-9, 11, 14-15, 19, 23, 51 You will probably note that one word occurs in all these varied verses - the word 'understanding' in its different forms. I have recently been very much impressed with the necessity for spiritual understanding. This parable is, I expect, as familiar to ... Read More

Pride and Its Undoing

If I were asked to choose a text for what is on my heart I should have very great difficulty. I can only say to you that the whole Book is the text, so I give you the whole Bible as my text, and what I have on my heart I am going to present, in the first place, in the form of three propositions or q... A Vital Ministry in a Day of Transition

"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord" (Malachi 4:5). "For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John." "And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come" (Matt. 11:13-14). Elijah and John the Baptist are in v... Read More

Concerning Jerusalem

Reading: Nehemiah 1:1-11 In Ezra and Nehemiah which are really two halves of a whole, and they form one narrative, there is a sense in which the whole can be gathered up in three representative and symbolic things which are found there in Jerusalem, namely, the Altar, the House and the Wall. We may ... Read More

The Anointing: Light Within Our Dwellings

When will the Lord's people, who have the Scriptures and who know the Scriptures so well in the letter, when will they come to realize and to recognize that if truly they have been crucified with Christ, if they have died in His death and have been raised together with Him and have received the Spir... Features of the City and Its Inhabitants

Reading: 1 Kings 7:1-12; Revelation 21:2,10-12,16,19. In both of these representations we have that which is symbolic of the place where the Lord delights and purposes to dwell. The "greater than Solomon" is building His house, and a house also for His Bride. The King is building the city where His ... Read More

In God or Outside of God?

(A message given at a conference in Switzerland in 1964) Reading: John 15:1,2,4; 1 Peter 3:18. There are two words to be underlined in the fifteenth chapter of John. The one word is 'true' - "I am the true vine" - and the other is 'abide'. which occurs eleven times in the chapter. If you look at the... Read More

Maturity - The Lord's Desire for His People

The great feature of the dispensation in which we live is the gathering out from the nations of the members of the Body of Christ, and then the bringing of them on to as full a measure of maturity as is possible. It is not only the salvation of souls, and it is not only the collecting of believers i... Read More

God's Man

"But thou, O man of God..." (1 Tim. 6:11). "O Timothy, guard that which is committed unto thee" (1 Tim. 6:20). "O man of God... O Timothy". Spiritual Warfare

Later on Jesus said to those same disciples, "Put your sword back into its place, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword" (Matthew 26:52). There must be a good explanation for the Lord's earlier command that His disciples... Read More

Bethany - The Lord's Thought For His Assembly

The upper room of the first chapter of the Acts corresponds with Bethany, the "house of figs", and Bethany with the upper room. Food for the Hungry

"Give ye them to eat" (Matt. 14:16; cf. Mark 6; Luke 9; John 6). This significance in its general meaning can be easily recognized,... Read More
