T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

Stewardship

"Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful." (1 Corinthians 4:1,2) A steward is a man who, on the one hand, stands in a living relationship to all that his lord has and, on the oth... Read More

Reproduction by Divine Life

An organism is never an end in itself... and is never something for itself. It is a means to a larger end - a channel for larger purposes - and the object of an organism is to reproduce itself by life. That reproduction is always sacrificial. It always costs. It is always by the vessel's yielding up... Read More

For the Sake of the Name

"For the sake of the Name they went forth" (3 John 7). "...the world hateth you... they will also persecute you... But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me" (John 15:19-21). That portion in the Gospel throws light on the statement in the e... Read More

Is He Really Lord?

Take the matter of service - ministry - the work of the Lord unto which we are called. Anyone who is really in spiritual ministry - really in spiritual work for the Lord - knows how difficult it is, how hard... intensely hard... growingly hard it is. It is fraught with difficulties of almost every k... Read More

Crucified to the Religious World

"But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world" (Galatians 6:14). It is interesting to notice the particular way in which the Apostle speaks of the world here. That term is a very comprehensive term and in... Read More

God's Sovereign Activities

Not Now But Afterwards

"Who is there among you that will give ear to this? that will hearken and hear for the time to come?" (Isaiah 42:23). Without considering the context of these words, we use them to ask ourselves if we really believe that there is a time to come. Do we believe that the time to come is a bigger time t... Read More

READING: Heb. 10:37-39; 11:12:1-2. In order rightly to appreciate and apprehend the value of this part of the letter, from the end of Chapter 10 through into Chapter 12, we have to remember the position in which these Hebrew believers were represented as being, or the position to which they were bei... Responsibility For What We Have

"They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them.... If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, if one rise from the dead" (Luke 16:29,31). Is the Great "Shaking" at Hand?

"Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also the heavens". Hebrews 12:26-27.
