T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

The Voice of the Son of God

Reading: John 5:25, 28; 11:43; 6:63, 65; 8:43; 10:4,5; 10:16. It is well known that with John 11 a transition has taken place. Up to chapter 10 a series of spiritual truths and principles has been very largely enunciated and made practical in relation to a number of individuals. With chapter 10 thos... Read More

Under the Spirit's Government

Transcribed from a message given in 1965. The spoken form has been retained verbatim. His face... as a flint... to go up to Jerusalem. See what that means? All that was involved in that... we know and He knew, but He set his face steadfastly as a flint, to go up to Jerusalem; He's committed. He's co... Read More

Ye Are My Friends

Among the various titles by which Christians were called in the New Testament surely the most wonderful is that given by the Lord Jesus - "Ye are my friends": "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends if ye do the things which I command you.... Read More

The Need of the Hour

As we take account of the situation today we feel more and more deeply convinced that the greatest need of the hour is for men of vision and courage. But we use the word "vision" in the specific sense in which it is used in the Bible and not in the general sense, of enterprise. That is, what is need... Read More

The Meaning of Christian Service

What is Christian service according to the mind of God? It is not our having a very full program of Christian activities - not necessarily. It is not that we are always busy in what we call "the things of the Lord." It is not the measure and amount of our activity and busyness - the degree of our pe... Read More

Understanding of the Times

Some Observations and An Appeal by the Editor In his "Holy War" John Bunyan's spiritual acumen is rarely more impressive than in that point in the enemy's strategy to capture Mansoul where he orders that Mr. Understanding - the Town Clerk - must be put in a dark dungeon where he cannot see what is g... The Spoil of Battle

"From spoil won in battles they dedicated gifts to maintain the house of the Lord." 1 Chronicles 26:27. From this passage of Scripture we gather that the House of the Lord is constituted out of our conflicts. The Lord builds from the fruit of conflict. Thus it was in the temple, given through David ... The Rainbow

"I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. The Incense-Bearer

"...and by me sends forth the knowledge of Him, a stream of fragrant incense, throughout the world. For Christ's is the fragrance which I offer up to God, whether among those in the way of salvation, or among those in the way of perdition; but to these it is an odour of death, to those of life." Union with Christ in Consecration

READING: Leviticus 8:22-24; Romans 12:1-2; John 17:19. Referring to this passage in chapter 8 of the book of Leviticus, it is important to note what happened in the consecration of Aaron and his sons to the priesthood at that particular point. The ram of consecration was brought, and Aaron and his s... Read More

The New Age of the Holy Spirit

The book which goes by the title "The Acts" is the book which introduces a new age; it marks the passing of certain days, age-days, and the arrival of a new day, a new age-day. But it not only marks that change; it sets forth the character of the new day. Among the many very important things which t... Read More

Ye Are... A Holy Nation

Reading: Matthew 21:42-44; 1 Peter 2:7-10. These passages refer, as you see, to that very solemn and, in some respects, tragic thing: the truth that all that could and should have been the inheritance and the vocation of Israel was lost by them and to them because of their unbelief, and was transfer...
