For Reading and Meditation:      Psalm 104:1-35Now we consider God's might and power in the act of preservation. No creature has power to preserve itself. "Can papyrus grow tall where there is no marsh?" asked Job (Job 8:11). Both man and beast would perish if there were no food, and there would be no food if the earth were not refreshed with fruitful showers. As one preacher put it: "We came from God's hand and we remain in His hand." Think of the marvel of life in the womb. How an infant can live for so many months in such a cramped environment - and without breathing - is unaccountable except for the power of God in preservation. It was divine preservation Daniel was thinking of when he said to the godless Belshazzar: "You did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways" (Daniel 5:23). Everywhere in the Scriptures God is presented not only as the Creator of the world but as its Sustainer and Preserver also. God has not wound up the universe like a clock and then separated Himself from it; He is active in sustaining it, and were He to remove Himself from it, it would cease to exist. The writer to the Hebrews reminds us that He is "upholding all things by the word of his power" (1:3, KJV). If the maker of some artifact were to die, his death would make no difference to it. It would continue to exist just as it did before. Not so with God and His world, however. If God were to die the universe would fall to pieces. But don't worry - God cannot die. The universe is quite secure.O God, when I consider how You are my Sustainer and my Preserver my heart is humbled before You. You cannot die and because I am linked to You, I cannot die. I know my body will die but my soul is Yours - forever. Thank You dear Father. WHAT a sweet portion is this for the aged disciples of the Lord Jesus: heart and flesh may fail them, but God will not forsake them. Having begun a good work in them, He will carry it on. His gifts and callings are without repentance. He will be as kind, as tender, and as gracious at last as at the first. He will carry us, The eternal God is our refuge, underneath are the everlasting arms. He will carry us safely through every danger, over every difficulty, into His presence and glory. Aged pilgrim, lean upon thy God, look unto Him; and as the nurse carrieth the sucking child, so will thy God carry thee. He will prove Himself faithful to His word, and ultimately call you forth as a witness to the same. Fear not then in reference to the evening of old age: thy God will supply thee; He will support thee; and at last land thee safe where the storms of trouble never blow, where weakness and fears are never felt. "Take no anxious thought for the morrow; let the morrow take thought for the things of itself; sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." The promise of thy God cannot fail thee; He will guide thee and carry thee to His kingdom and glory. "And even to your old age I am He; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you." Isaiah 46:4 The year is very old, and here is a promise for our aged friends; yes, and for us all, as age creeps over us. Let us live long enough, and we shall all have hoar hairs; therefore we may as well enjoy this promise by the foresight of faith. When we grow old our God will still be the I AM, abiding evermore the same. Hoar hairs tell of our decay, but He decayeth not. When we cannot carry a burden and can hardly carry ourselves, the LORD will carry us. Even as in our young days He carried us like lambs in His bosom, so will He in our years of infirmity. He made us, and He will care for us. When we become a burden to our friends and a burden to ourselves, the LORD will not shake us off, but the rather He will take us up and carry and deliver us more fully than ever. In many cases the LORD gives His servants a long and calm evening. They worked hard all day and wore themselves out in their Master's service, and so He said to them, "Now rest in anticipation of that eternal Sabbath which I have prepared for you." Let us not dread old age. Let us grow old graciously since the LORD Himself is with us in fullness of grace.

He Will Carry Us Home

The Bible is fairly full of tokens of God's marvelous care for His people. During Israel's forty-year trek through the wilderness, they ate food from heaven (Exodus 16:4), had an unfailing supply of water (1 Corinthians 10:4), and were equipped with shoes that never wore out (Deuteronomy 29:5).It is the same in our wilderness journey. To prove this, our Lord reminds us how His care for us is so much greater than His care for birds, flowers and animals. He speaks of sparrows, for instance. He provides their food (Matthew 6:26). Not one of them is forgotten before God (Lu. 12:6). Not one falls to the ground without Him (Matthew 10:29), or, as H. A. Ironside said, "God attends the funeral of every sparrow." The moral of the story, of course, is that we are of more value to Him than many sparrows (Matthew 10:31).If He clothes the lilies of the field more beautifully than Solomon was ever attired, He will much more clothe us (Matthew 6:30). If He makes provision for the care of oxen, how much more will He care for our needs (1 Corinthians 9:9).As our High Priest, the Lord Jesus bears our names on His shoulders - the place of power (Exodus 28:9-12) and on His breast - the place of affection (Exodus 28:15-21). Also our names are engraved in the palms of His hands (Isaiah 49:16), a fact that inevitably reminds us of the nail wounds He sustained for us at Calvary.He knows the exact number of the hairs of our head (Matthew 10:30). He numbers our tossings at night and keeps count of our tears in His book (Psalms 56:8 RSV).Whoever touches us, touches the apple of His eye (Zechariah 2:8). No weapon formed against us can prosper (Isaiah 54:17).Whereas the heathen carry their gods on their shoulders (Isaiah 46:7), our God carries His people (Isaiah 46:4).When we go through the waters, the rivers or the fire, He is with us (Isaiah 43:2).
