<p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="la+3:19-27">Lamentations 3:19-27</span></span></p><p>Now we come to the turning point of the seventy-third psalm - the point where the psalmist takes the first step toward the resolution of his problem. We must not forget that the purpose of this psalm is to show us how the writer solved his problem, so that when we get into the same kind of difficulty we can apply the same solutions. Here, then, is his first step: "If I had said, 'I will speak thus,' I would have betrayed your children. When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me"  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="ps+73:15-16">Psalm 73:15-16</span>). We see in these words what it was that arrested his feelings of doubt and despair - the thought that if he were to speak out of his discouraged heart he would put a stumbling block in someone else's path. "If I did that," he thinks to himself, "I would be untrue to the generation of God's children. So, rather than discourage others with my doubts, I will not say anything at all." Some might regard it as strange that the first step the psalmist took on the road to recovery should be one with such a low motivation. Indeed, there are those who have said it was unworthy of him and that he should not have allowed himself to get into that condition. Similarly, when people in the Church today confess to having "unspiritual" feelings, I am sure you have heard judgmental advice-givers address them with words like: "You ought not to feel like that!" But the point is that they do feel like that, and reality demands that we begin right where they are and not where we would like them to be. Personally, I do not care how low a person's stand might be as long as he or she is standing and not slipping.</p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">Gracious and loving Father, teach me how to handle myself in a crisis and help me not to be too proud to begin at the lowest level. Better to have my feet on the lowest rung of the ladder than to be struggling in the mire. <p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="ps+145:1-20">Psalm 145:1-20</span></span></p><p>We ended yesterday by saying that the fact God knows everything ought to strengthen our faith and cause us to bow in adoration before Him. Yet how little do we reflect on this divine perfection. Those who are inclined to rebel against God hate this aspect of His Being and would do away with it if they could. They wish there might be no Witness to their sin, no Searcher of their hearts, no Judge of their deeds. How solemn are the words of the psalmist recorded in  <span class="scriptRef" ref="ps+90:8">Psalm 90:8</span>: "You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence." To the believer, however, the truth of God's omniscience (all knowledge) ought to be one of tremendous comfort and security. In times of perplexity we ought to say like Job: "He knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold" (<span class="scriptRef" ref="job+23:10">Job 23:10</span>). Whatever might be going on in our lives that is profoundly mysterious to us and quite incomprehensible to those who are around us, we must never lose sight of the fact that "He knows the way that [we] take." Right down the running ages God's people have consoled themselves time and time again with the fact that God knows everything about them. The psalmist, when seeking to stir his soul to confidence and hope, reminded himself in the midst of his weakness and weariness: "He knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust"  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="ps+103:14">Psalm 103:14</span>). And Simon Peter, when his failure brought him almost to the point of despair and the searching question came "Do you love me?" said: "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you" (<span class="scriptRef" ref="joh+21:17">John 21:17</span>).</p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">Father, help me reflect on this fact that You know everything, for I see that the more I understand it the more secure I will feel in my soul. Teach me still more, dear Lord. In Jesus' Name. Grace is more than a synonym for love; it is a characteristic of the Deity which is quite close to love (and mercy) but yet deserves to be seen as different and distinctive. I heard an old Welsh preacher say: "Grace is a word with a 'stoop' in it; love reaches out on the same level, but grace always has to stoop to pick one up." It was probably this same thought that an anonymous writer had in mind when he said: "Grace is love at its loveliest, falling on the unlovable and making it lovely." But it is to the great Puritan preacher Thomas Goodwin we must turn for the best clarification of the difference between love and grace: "Grace is more than mercy and love. It superadds to them. It denotes not simply love but love of a sovereign, transcendently superior One that may do what He will, that may freely choose whether He will love or no. There may be love between equals, and an inferior may love a superior, but love in a Superior, and so superior that He may do what He will, in such a One love is called grace. Grace is attributed to princes; they are said to be 'gracious' to their subjects whereas subjects cannot be gracious to princes." Grace then is God's kindness bestowed upon the undeserving; benevolence handed down to those who have no merit; a hand reaching down to those who have fallen into a pit. The Bible bids us believe that on the throne of the universe there is a God like that.</p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">Loving and gracious God, help me understand more deeply than ever what it means to be a recipient of Your grace. I have some idea but I long to realize it even more. Help me, my Father. In Jesus' Name. The constituent parts of personality are predicated of God on almost every page of the Bible. "I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind," said the Lord to Eli in  <span class="scriptRef" ref="1sa+2:35">1 Samuel 2:35</span>. This shows (if it needs showing) that God has a mind with which He thinks. God has emotions also - another aspect of personality. Some modern-day theologians claim that God is unable to feel, but clearly this is not supported by Scripture. God can be angry  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="ps+2:12">Psalm 2:12</span>), jealous  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="zec+1:14-15">Zechariah 1:14-15</span>), merciful  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="ps+78:38">Psalm 78:38</span>), and joyful  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="de+30:9">Deuteronomy 30:9</span>). These are just a few of the emotions which Scripture talks about, but there are many more. Again, God chooses and decides. "And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth  And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created "  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="ge+6:6-7">Genesis 6:6-7</span>, KJV). While the majority of human beings believe in some kind of God, many view Him as being so great that He cannot possibly take a personal interest in such insignificant creatures as ourselves. Dr. Henry Norris Russell, one of the great astronomers of this century and a Christian, once gave a talk on the vastness of the universe. Afterwards someone asked him this question: "How is it possible for such a great and infinite God to have time for me?" This was his reply: "An infinite God can dispatch the affairs of this universe in the twinkling of an eye, thus giving Him plenty of time for you."</p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">O Father, help me in the midst of every trial and difficulty to drop my anchor in this reassuring and encouraging revelation - no matter what my problem, You always have plenty of time to give to me. I am so deeply, deeply thankful. <p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="heb+4:12-16">Hebrews 4:12-16</span></span></p><p>Yesterday we ended with the case of the woman who said that she didn't know how to mourn, when in reality her problem was she didn't want to mourn. Whenever we are unwilling to face a negative emotion, it implies that we are not in control of it, but that it is in control of us. Christians are often taught to pretend that they feel joyful when really they are miserable. Our text today, however, tells us that we have a great High Priest who can sympathise with us in our weaknesses. How pointless it is to conceal our weaknesses from the Lord and deny ourselves the comfort of His uncritical compassionate understanding. This is very important, for I would say that eight out of ten Christians have a completely wrong view of how to handle hurts and sorrows. The typical Christian reaction to negative emotions is either denial or expression. We dealt yesterday with the issue of denial - refusing to face them and feel them - so let's consider for a moment what we mean by the term "expression". The expression of emotions is the act of letting our emotions out. This is a popular approach with many of today's counsellors and therapists. They say, when you feel upset, hurt or angry, then shout and scream or punch a pillow until you have released those pent-up emotions. There is no doubt that some relief can be gained in this way, but it is not a very Biblical or mature way of dealing with our negative feelings. The right way of handling negative feelings is neither to deny them or express them, but to acknowledge them. But more of that tomorrow. </p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">O Father, I see that this whole issue of emotions is a minefield in which I must tread carefully and cautiously. Take my hand as I move through this area and lead me to clear and Biblical conclusions. For Jesus' sake. <p>When the Bible speaks of man in his tripartite being, the order is always spirit, soul and body. When men use these terms together, the order almost invariably is body, soul and spirit. Sin has turned God's order upside down. Now man puts the body first, then the soul, and the spirit last of all.</p><p>The two non-material parts of man's being are his spirit and his soul. The spirit enables him to have fellowship with God. The soul has to do with his emotions and passions. Although it is not possible for us to distinguish the spirit and soul in minute detail, we can and should learn to distinguish between what is spiritual and soulish.</p><p>What then is spiritual? Preaching that exalts Christ is. Prayer to God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Spirit is. Service that is motivated by love to the Lord and empowered by the Spirit is. Worship that is in spirit and truth is.</p><p>And what is soulish? Preaching that draws attention to man, to his oratory, commanding presence or wit. Mechanical prayers with no real heart involvement but designed to make an impression on others. Service that is self-appointed, carried on for monetary reward, or employing carnal methods. Worship that revolves around visible, material aids rather than the unseen spiritual realities.</p><p>What does the Church of God have to do with consecrated buildings, stained glass windows, ecclesiastical vestments, honorific titles, candles, incense and all such trappings? Or, coming closer to home, what does the Church have to do with Madison Avenue promotional efforts, with fund raising for hire, with evangelistic gimmickry, with personality cults, with musical extravaganzas?</p><p>The advertising in the average Christian magazine is enough to show how soulish we have become.</p><p>Paul draws a distinction between service that is gold, silver, precious stones and that which is wood, hay and stubble (<span class="scriptRef" ref="1co+3:12">1 Corinthians 3:12</span>). Everything that is spiritual will resist the fire of God's discerning judgment. All that is soulish will go up in flames. </p><p> </p>

Truths to Live By - One Day at a Time

"…the division of soul and spirit." (Hebrews 4:12 NASB)

<p>A Christian university student was witnessing to another student who was from a liberal seminary. When the believer quoted a verse, the seminarian said, "I don't believe the Bible." The Christian quoted another verse, only to be met with "I told you I don't believe the Bible." The third time the Christian quoted a verse the seminarian became agitated and exploded, "Don't quote the Bible to me. I've already told you I don't believe it." By then the believer felt completely frustrated and defeated. He figured that he was a total failure as a soul winner.</p><p>It so happened that Dr. H. A. Ironside was a guest at his home that night. At the supper table, the Christian student shared his disappointing experience about the seminarian. Then he asked Dr. Ironside, "When you are trying to witness to someone and he says to you, 'I don't believe the Bible,' what do you do?" Dr. Ironside replied with a happy smile, "I just quote more of it."</p><p>That is excellent advice for any would-be soul winners. When people say they don't believe the Bible, just quote more of it. The Word of God is living and powerful. It has an effect on people even when they don't believe it.</p><p>Suppose two men are dueling. One says to the other, "I don't believe your sword is real steel." What happens? Does the second man lay down his sword and admit defeat? Or does he give a scientific discourse on the carbon content and malleability of the metal? Ridiculous! He gives his opponent a good sharp jab and lets him feel how real the sword is. So it is with the Bible. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. It needs to be used more than it needs to be defended. It is well able to defend itself.</p><p>I do not deny that there is a place for proofs of the inspiration of the Scriptures. Such proofs serve a valuable purpose in confirming the faith of those who are already saved. In a few cases they help people come to saving faith. But generally speaking people aren't convinced by human reasonings or arguments. "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." Men need to be confronted with the powerful Word of God. A single verse of Scripture is worth a thousand arguments.</p><p>This highlights the importance of Scripture memorization. If I haven't committed verses to memory, the Spirit will not be able to bring them forth at the appropriate time. But the main point is that God has not promised to honor my words, but He has promised to honor His own. So in dealing with the unsaved, I must use the sword of the Spirit generously and watch it produce conviction and conversion by a miracle of grace. </p><p> </p>

<p align="justify">The whole thought of God, running right 
through this letter, is spiritual fullness; and any religion – even Christianity 
– mixing and confusing soul and spirit, the sentient and the spiritual (as did 
the Christian-Judaism and as does organized Christianity) is doomed to the 
destiny of Judaism. If we draw upon the soul resources of people to build up 
Christianity, instead of recognizing that “all things are out from God” – that 
all must first come from Him and have its first point of contact with man in his 
spirit, which, being renewed (made anew) becomes the vessel and vehicle of all 
divine things for ever after – no matter how immense may be our structure, it is 
going to crash when the great "shaking" comes. Christianity now is very largely 
a built up thing with many Jewish features in it; i.e., outward orders, forms, 
vestments, titles, buildings and rigidly fixed boundaries of apprehension of 
truth. Viewed from a heavenly standpoint, it is all so much nonsense, 
child's play; albeit so seriously regarded by its children.</p>
<p align="justify">It is important to recognize that this 
letter was addressed to a people who – for a long period – had held the position 
nationally of a people whom God had taken out of the world unto Himself. It 
seeks to explain their nature and history in the light of Christ and true 
spiritual Christianity. It shows that even such a people may make their 
separation earthly and earthbound, and that for so doing they have been 
“overthrown,” and will – even as Christians – be overthrown again if they repeat 
in Christianity what their fathers did in Judaism. There is something here much 
more than typology interpreted and the interpretation accepted as to salvation 
from sin and judgment; it is the essential and indispensable heavenly 
relatedness and life of the Lord's people as <i>inwardly</i> detached from the 
natural life even in a religious sense.</p>
