For Reading and Meditation:      Isaiah 3:1-11Now we pause to ask ourselves how this fifth Beatitude, when practised, engenders within us good mental and spiritual health. Psychologists have shown that those who lack the qualities of mercy and compassion are more likely to develop physical problems. Harsh, judgmental attitudes may bring a sense of satisfaction to the person who does not know the meaning of mercy, but it is a false sense of satisfaction. A verse that, strictly speaking, does not apply to what I am saying here, but nevertheless has some application is this: "It did taste sweet, like honey, but when I had eaten it, it was bitter to digest" (Revelation 10:10, Moffatt). That is what happens whenever we adopt any attitude that is not in harmony with Jesus Christ. At first it does "taste sweet, like honey" - its beginnings are apparently sweet, but it is "bitter to digest" - it cannot be assimilated. Our human constitution is not made to function effectively on any attitude that is foreign to the spirit of Jesus Christ. A Christian doctor says: "We are allergic to wrong attitudes just as some people are allergic to shrimps." I am physically allergic to red and green peppers. I have tried them scores of times, but the result has always been the same - I get sick. I am just as allergic to harsh, judgmental attitudes. I can't assimilate them. They disrupt me - body, soul and spirit. And what goes for me goes also for you. When we fail to practise the principles which our Lord outlined for us in the Beatitudes, then our sense of well-being is lowered, depleted and poisoned. Goodness is good for us - spiritually, mentally and physically.Father, something is being burned into my consciousness: there is only one healthy way to live - Your Way. When I break with You, I break with life. Help me always to maintain a close connection with You. In Jesus' Name. Psalms 23:6 A devout poet sings: LORD, when Thou Puttest in my time a day, as Thou dost now, Unknown in other years, grant, I entreat, Such grace illumine it, that whate'er its phase It add to holiness, and lengthen praise! This day comes but once in four years.... Up till now goodness and mercy, like two guards, have followed us from day to day, bringing up the rear even as grace leads the van; and as this out-of-the-way day is one of the days of our life, the two guardian angels will be with us today also. Goodness to supply our needs and mercy to blot out our sins  these twain shall attend our every step this day and every day till days shall be no more. Wherefore, let us serve the LORD on this peculiar day with special consecration of heart and sing His praises with more zest and sweetness than ever. Could we not today make an unusual offering to the cause of God or to the poor? By inventiveness of love let us make this twenty-ninth of February a day to be remembered forever.

When Love divine was about to follow Christ back to heaven, he said, " Not so; I am no more in the world, but these are in the world." So this Love has ever since tarried with the people of God. The Christian knows that goodness and mercy shall go with him all the days of his life, as two attendant angels. He knows that they have followed him hitherto. But it is some times difficult for him to perceive that they are with him. When Jeremiah was in that deep, dark dungeon, where there was no water, but mire, it seemed as though goodness and mercy had left him and gone to walk on the battlements of Jerusalem. Men came to the border of that pestilential pit and asked him mockingly where, those companions of his now were. But Jeremiah's eyes getting accustomed to the darkness soon discovered them there. They gave him some bread of heaven to eat. Then when Jerusalem was taken, and the proud enemies of the prophet were carried into captivity, Jeremiah remained in the land; goodness and mercy followed him all his days. Persecution is not so persevering as they are. When Elijah was under the juniper-tree, goodness and mercy awoke him and ministered unto him. " Why do you flee for your life?" they said; " have we fled from thee?" " I do well to be angry," said Jonah, insulting these heavenly attendants to their face. He said to goodness, "Thou art an impostor, not goodness, but unkindness:" and to mercy, " Thou art severity, thou hast no beauty, get thee gone." Did they follow him still? They sat down and said to him, " We will not go." They might have spoken of the depths of the sea whither and whence they had accompanied him; but they spoke to him of the much cattle that was in Nineveh, and of an immense number of innocent little children. How often have I been ready to use the language of Jonah; how often frowned on these celestial ones, and motioned them angrily away, because they would not take the form my fancy painted: yet have they still followed me.
