We have it in our text for today.The Living Bible puts this best and I have no hesitation in saying that although it is not regarded as a true translation (it is rather a paraphrase), its rendering of Romans 8:29 is one of the most exciting things I have ever read. This is what it says: "For from the very beginning God decided that those who came to him  should become like his Son." God's great energy and wisdom, working on behalf of all Christians, is directed to making us like His Son Jesus Christ. Of course this purpose will only be fully realized in the world to come, but while we are here He is pursuing that selfsame purpose nevertheless. It is only when we comprehend this that we will be able to understand the purpose that lies behind all our trials and difficulties. Romans 8:28 - "And we know that all that happens to us is working for our good" (TLB) - must be read in connection with Romans 8:29. Because God is committed to making us like His Son, His wisdom goes to work on every trial that comes our way in order to bring from it something that will enrich our character and make us more like Jesus Christ. Infinite power is ruled by infinite wisdom. He could deliver us and make our lives comfortable but in a fallen world that is not the best purpose. Understanding this is crucial if we are to live our lives the way God desires.Father, forgive me that so often my goals are diametrically opposed to Yours. For Reading and Meditation:      Jeremiah 31:1-12"How little real love there is for God," says theologian Arthur W. Pink. He suggests that this and the resulting low level of spirituality in today's Church are caused by our hearts being so little occupied with thoughts of the divine love. "The better we are acquainted with His love," he says, "- its character, its fullness, its blessedness - the more will our hearts be drawn out in love to Him." We focus now on the fact that God's love is eternal. God being eternal, it follows that His love also is eternal. This means that God loved us before earth and heaven were called into existence, that He has set His heart upon us from all eternity. This is the truth set forth in Ephesians 1:4-5 where we are told that we were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. What a tranquilizer this is for our hearts! If God's love for you had no beginning then it has no ending either. It is from "everlasting to everlasting." Another thing we need to know about the love of God is that it is a holy love. This means that His love is not regulated by whim, or caprice, or sentiment, but by principle. Just as His grace reigns not at the expense of righteousness but "through" it (Romans 5:21), so His love never conflicts with His holiness. This is why John says that God is light before he says God is love. And this is why, too, the Almighty never lets us get away with anything. He loves us too much for that. His love is pure, holy and unmixed with maudlin sentimentality. God will not wink at sin, not even in His own people.O Father, the more I learn about Your love the more my heart is set on fire. Increase my understanding, for I see that the more I comprehend how much I am loved the more secure I am in that love. Beloved, if we are believers in Jesus, all the perfections of Jehovah's nature are arrayed for our defence and safety. He is engaged by covenant, by promise, and by oath, to support, supply, and befriend us. He is for us. Engaged in our cause. Opposed to our enemies. Pledged to deliver us in six troubles, and not forsake us in the seventh. We may challenge our foes, for God is with us; what then is man? What devils? We may admire our safety, happiness, and honour; God the Lord God omnipotent, is our ally. We should be grateful, for what is our desert? What do we possess? What were our expectations? What has God promised? We may triumph in Christ, but only in Christ: if God be for us, then supplies shall certainly be sent us. If God be for us, men or devils shall never prevail against us. If God be for us, we shall overcome the world, conquer death, and eternally inherit glory. But God is for us, who then shall harm us? What then shall alarm or terrify us? God is ours; we are God's. The omnipotence of God means that He can do anything that is not inconsistent with His other attributes. Hear the uniform testimony of Scripture! "I am the Almighty God" (Genesis 17:1). "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" (Genesis 18:14). "I know that thou canst do all things, and that no purpose of thine can be thwarted" (Job 42:2 NASB). "There is nothing too hard for Thee" Qer. 32:17). "With God all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26). "For with God nothing shall be impossible" (Luke 1:37).But it is understood that God cannot do anything that is inconsistent with His own character. For instance, it is impossible for God to lie (Hebrews 6:18). He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). He cannot sin because He is absolutely holy. He cannot fail because He is absolutely dependable.The omnipotence of God is seen in His creation and sustaining of the universe, in His providence, in the salvation of sinners, and in the judgment of the impenitent. The greatest display of His power in the Old Testament was the Exodus; in the New Testament, the resurrection of Christ.If God is omnipotent, then no man can fight successfully against Him. "There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord" (Proverbs 21:30).If God is omnipotent, then the believer is on the winning side. One with God is a majority. "If God be for us, who can be against us" (Romans 8:31).If God is omnipotent, then in prayer we can deal in the realm of the impossible. Romans 8:31 KJV What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
If God be for us, we are justified in making light of all our enemies. Any injury that they can do us is of little account, while we have this all-powerful ally.
This seems a mere truism; but it is really the language of an uncommon faith. He goes on to enumerate tribulation, persecution, distress, famine, nakedness, peril, the sword. Now, these things involve tremendous losses; loss of honor, friends, domestic and social enjoyments, wealth, liberty, security, and even food and clothing. Before the thousandth part of these evils, the boldest hearts have recoiled, the strongest have turned and fled. The assurance that God would be with them had no more power to nerve and comfort them, than if a shield made of cobwebs had been presented to them.
The language of Paul is the language then of one whose faith has taught him to find everything excellent, everything desirable in God. In vain the world arrays its forces, puts on its terrors; he knows the utter insignificance of these compared with the treasures of might that dwell with him, because God dwells with him.
When the Israelites came out of Egypt, the entire force of Egypt was against them. The sea was against them. The desert was against them. The Amalekites were against them. All nations were against them. Their own inexperience, their waywardness, their evil habits, - these were against them. But God was with them. And they came off more than conquerors.
Thus it was with the apostles. The Jews were against them, and so were the Gentiles. Stripes, bonds, and imprisonment awaited them in every place. The power of the priesthood was against them. All the powers of an empire, the mightiest the world had ever seen, were against them. Yet they triumphed. God was with them, and none but God.
Had the church a faith more apostolic, there would not be seen, as there is, alas! too much, a disposition to snatch at worldly aid, and to avail ourselves of worldly wisdom. We need to know that he who is with us is mightier than they that are in the world. Knew we this better, we would enter many paths from which we now turn away; address ourselves to many tasks to which we now shut our eyes.

I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. § I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. § [Be] strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. § The joy of the Lord is your strength. Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Let your hands be strong, you who have been hearing in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets.” § Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Daily Light on the Daily Path or Daily Light is a Christian daily devotional scripture reading published by Bagster & Sons about 1875. It has been reprinted continually since then. It consists of brief groupings of scripture passages which speak to prominent Biblical themes—two themes (morning and evening) for each day of the year.  “Be strong … and work; for I am with  you,” says the Lord of hosts. 

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? § He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. § My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. If God is for us, who can be against us? § The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? § Through You we will push down our enemies; through Your name we will trample those who rise up against us. § We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Arise and begin working, and the Lord be with you.

 Be strong and of good courage.

 The Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught. 

Do you not fear Me?” says the Lord. “Will you not tremble at My presence, who have placed the sand as the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass beyond it? And though its waves toss to and fro, yet they cannot prevail; though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it.” § Exaltation comes neither from the east nor from the west nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He puts down one, and exalts another. He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. § You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled. If God is for us, who can be against us? § Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. The very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

 The Lord reigns. 

If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. § God set forth [Jesus] as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. He is gracious to him, and says, “Deliver him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom.” What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? … It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Evening Daily Light

 If a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him? 

God is for us, who can be against us? § The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? You have given a banner to those who fear You. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident. Now look, God Himself is with us as our head. § The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them. Why do the nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing? … He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision. § Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing; speak the word, but it will not stand, for God is with us.

 The-Lord-Is-My-Banner. 

May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble; may the name of the God of Jacob defend you; may He send you help from the sanctuary, and strengthen you out of Zion … We will rejoice in your salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners! … Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They have bowed down and fallen; but we have risen and stand upright. When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him. § No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. If God is for us, who can be against us? § The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us, … and He will deliver us.

 The Lord is for me. 

The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty … Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting. The Lord is … great in power. § If God is for us, who can be against us? § Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us … and He will deliver us. § My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. § He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to Your name give glory. § Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; for all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head over all … Now therefore, our God, we thank You and praise Your glorious name. But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from You, and of Your own we have given You.

 Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. 

The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord. § If there is calamity in a city, will not the Lord have done it? I am the Lord, and there is no other; there is no God besides Me. I will gird you, though you have not known Me, that they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting that there is none besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other; I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things. He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth.
