"They that sow in tears shall reap in joy." Psalms 126:5 Weeping times are suitable for sowing: we do not want the ground to be too dry. Seed steeped in the tears of earnest anxiety will come up all the sooner. The salt of prayerful tears will give the good seed a flavor which will preserve it from the worm: truth spoken in awful earnestness has a double life about it. Instead of stopping our sowing because of our weeping, let us redouble our efforts because the season is so propitious. Our heavenly seed could not fitly be sown laughing. Deep sorrow and concern for the souls of others are a far more fit accompaniment of godly teaching than anything like levity. We have heard of men who went to war with a light heart, but they were beaten; and it is mostly so with those who sow in the same style. Come, then, my heart, sow on in thy weeping, for thou has the promise of a joyful harvest. Thou shalt reap. Thou, thyself, shalt see some results of thy labor. This shall come to thee in so large a measure as to give thee joy, which a poor, withered, and scanty harvest would not do. When thine eyes are dim with silver tears, think of the golden corn. Bear cheerfully the present toil and disappointment; for the harvest day will fully recompense thee.

Tears, Then Joyful Harvest

In Psalms 126:1-6 the children of Israel are reminiscing about their return to the land after their captivity in Babylon. It had been as if they were in a dream world, filled with laughter and singing. Even their pagan neighbors had commented on the great things the Lord had done for His people.Now that they were back in their own land, they had to start planting crops. But this posed a problem. They had brought back only a limited amount of grain with them. They could use it as food now; after all, there were no crops in the field for them to harvest. Or they could use it as seed, sowing it in the ground with the hope of an abundant harvest in days to come. If they decided to use most of it as seed, that meant that they would have to live frugally and sacrificially until harvest time. They decided on the latter course.As the farmer went out into his fields, dipped his hand into the seed, and scattered it broadcast on the plowed land, he would shed tears at the thought of the privations he and his family would have to endure until the time of harvest.But later when the fields teemed with golden grain, his tears would be turned to joy as he brought the ripened sheaves back to the barn. All the sacrifices his household had made would be richly rewarded.We can think of this in connection with our own stewardship of material things. The Lord entrusts each of us with a limited amount of money. We can spend it in self-indulgence, buying up whatever our hearts desire. Or by living sacrificially we can invest it in the work of the Lord - in foreign missions, in Christian literature, in Gospel radio broadcasts, in the local church and in many other forms of evangelistic activity. In that case it will mean choosing a modest standard of living so that everything above essentials will go into the work of the Lord. It will mean living on a restricted budget so that souls will not perish for want of the Gospel.But any such sacrifices will not be worth mentioning when the time of harvest comes, when we will see men and women in heaven as a result of our sacrificial living. One person saved from hell to become a worshiper of the Lamb of God for all eternity is worth any sacrifice we can make now.

The tears of those that sow, flow from various causes. Here is one who has greatly hungered and thirsted after the communications of God's love; who mourns over his own heart of unbelief; over his inaptitude for the things of God; who has been fascinated by the conception of a divine life to be led on the earth, a life of conscious union with God attended by peace flowing like a river, and revealing itself by ardent love, cheerful labor, and large success. But the very conception of the thing only makes his actual experience more inglorious and more insupportable. Tears are his meat night and day. In this state, how can it be expected that he should go forth and exhort men to believe on Jesus; or engage in the distribution of tracts setting forth the preciousness of Christ? Nevertheless, he does it. With a heart breaking for the longing it hath, he tells his fellow-man that religion is the one thing needful; and brushing away a tear, he assures them that the only true happiness to be found on earth is to be found in Christ. And in this there is no insincerity. For his deepest conviction is this: that there is no joy worthy of the name save that which Christ gives to his people. He does not speak from present experience, but from faith. Here is another who trusted on the Lord that He would bear testimony to the word of His grace; but many a long year fulfills the ministry of this word without any such testimony being borne. Another is keenly sensitive to the taunts and reproaches of men, and the harvest of these is the only harvest that he seems to gather. Consider Jeremiah among the Jews, Brainerd among the Indians, and a thousand others. Let it not be supposed, however, that the words of life come with most power from an afflicted heart. It is often well that the heart should have had experience of affliction. But the servant of Christ should not be content till the kingdom of heaven, which is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost, be fully come in his heart. God meeteth him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness; and the command to rejoice in the Lord is a command that must be obeyed. Blessed is he that mourneth: why? because he shall be comforted. This mourning must pass away, and then the blessedness will appear in the consolation.
