For Reading and Meditation:      Psalm 22:1-11We continue looking at the attitude of the psalmist, who does not hesitate to tell the truth about himself. As we saw, he admits that his feet had well-nigh slipped and his faith had almost gone. I find the psalmist's honesty both stimulating and refreshing, especially when compared to the tendency of many in today's Church to pretend that things are not as they are. Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones said in one of his sermons: "I know of nothing in the spiritual life more discouraging than to meet the kind of person who seems to give the impression that he or she is always walking on the mountain top." I agree. You see, it is far more important to be honest than to appear to be the sort of person who is never thrown by problems. If you are not thrown, then fine; but if you are then admit it. But can't openness be a form of exhibitionism? Yes, it can. Some people may confess to failure as a means of drawing attention to themselves. But I do not believe that this was the psalmist's motive, for quite clearly he wrote the psalm to glorify not himself but God. The pathway to spiritual growth begins when we realistically and honestly face up to the struggles that are going on inside us. If we are so concerned about developing or preserving pleasant feelings that we ignore the negative feelings within us or pretend that they are non-existent, then we end up demeaning ourselves. An honest look may involve a struggle, but there is more hope in that for growth than there is in pretence or denial. O God, teach me to be unafraid to look at anything - myself included. Make me strong enough in You not to need the defences of pretence and denial. You are on the side of honesty; I am on its side too. Help me. In Jesus' Name. Our God is a God of patience. The Lord Jesus is the great Example of patience. The Holy Spirit is the Agent producing patience. Trials, troubles, and disappointments, are the means which exercise and strengthen it.The patience required, is a disposition to bear all that God has appointed for us, without complaining; yea, with resignation and hope: to wait God's time for the mercies we need, or for answers to the prayers we put up. Patience is the daughter of faith; and it is only as we believe that God has appointed, overrules, or commands, for our good and His glory, that we can be patient.Patience produces self-possession, shuts the mouth from complaining, keeps back the heart from seeking revenge, and is a principal point in self-government. Are you impatient? Then confess it, and mourn over it, before God; it will make you miserable, and lead you to dishonour God. Watch against it; the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.Look at the Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, at Jesus; and be ye also patient. "In your patience possess ye your souls." Be ye also patient. - James 5:8

"Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the LORD draweth nigh." James 5:8 The last word in the Canticle of love is, "Make haste, my beloved," and among the last words of the Apocalypse we read, "The Spirit and the Bride say, Come"; to which the heavenly Bridegroom answers, "Surely I come quickly." Love longs for the glorious appearing of the LORD and enjoys this sweet promise - "The coming of the LORD draweth nigh." This stays our minds as to the future. We look out with hope through this window. This sacred "window of agate" lets in a flood of light upon the present and puts us into fine condition for immediate work or suffering. Are we tired? Then the nearness of our joy whispers patience. Are we growing weary because we do not see the harvest of our seed-sowing? Again this glorious truth cries to us, "Be patient." Do our multiplied temptations cause us in the least to waver? Then the assurance that before long the LORD will be here preaches to us from this text, "Stablish your hearts." Be firm, be stable, be constant, "stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the LORD." Soon will you hear the silver trumpet which announces the coming of your King. Be not in the least afraid. Hold the fort, for He is coming; yea, He may appear this very day.

It Will Not Be Long

As we approach the end of the age, it is predictable that many will abandon the hope of Christ's any-moment return. But the truth is still there whether men hold it or not.The fact is that the Lord Jesus may come at any time. We do not know the day or hour of the Bridegroom's return for His bride; this means that He could come today. There is no prophecy that needs to be fulfilled before we hear His shout, the voice of the archangel and the trump of God. True, the church expects to experience tribulation throughout its time on earth, but the horrors of the Tribulation period are not part of its destiny. If the church has to go through, the Tribulation, that would mean that the Lord couldn't come for at least seven years, because we certainly are not in the Tribulation now, and when it does come, it will last for seven years.There is a large body of Scripture texts that teach us to be ready at all times for the Savior to appear. Notice the following: "…nearer than when we believed" (Romans 13:11)."The night is far spent, the day is at hand" (Romans 13:12)."The Lord is at hand" (Philippians 4:5)."For yet a little while, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry" (Hebrews 10:37)."…the coming of the Lord draweth nigh" (James 5:8)."…the judge standeth before the door" (James 5:9)."But the end of all things is at hand'"(1 Peter 4:7). These verses seem designed to create the impression on the mind that the Lord's coming is imminent. It is an event for which we should be watching and waiting. Our loins should be girded, our lights should be burning, and we should be like those who wait for their Lord (see Luke 12:35-36). Let us not succumb to those who teach that we have no right to expect Him at any moment. Rather let us believe in His imminent return, teach it enthusiastically, and let the truth shine out in our lives.

Because, first, there is no doubt about that coming. His first coming was the most wonderful, the most staggering to faith. That the Son of God should have been found in fashion as a man, without form or comeliness, with but rare coruscations of his glory, enduring the contradiction of sinners, and dying on the cross; this is a marvel that swallows up all marvels, and frees from all embarrassment the question of his second advent. Because he will come in glory such as no heart of man ever conceived, shedding an infinite lustre upon the least jot and tittle of his slighted Gospel, and embracing in his own matchless radiance and felicity, those who now accept the legacy of his promises, and walk in the path of his humiliation. Because we shall be forever with the Lord. The day of his coronation and of ours is a day on which the sun shall never go down. Because he cometh; he cometh! The bell of his providence is sounding ever and anon, telling that another prophecy is fulfilled, another hour of this our day of expectation elapsed, another footfall of his glorious approach accomplished. Be patient, therefore. Yet think not that by this we are bidden to wait supinely, and with our attention given to other things. But rather as they that watch for the morning, let us hasten unto the day of the Lord.

Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. § He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! Daily Light on the Daily Path or Daily Light is a Christian daily devotional scripture reading published by Bagster & Sons about 1875. It has been reprinted continually since then. It consists of brief groupings of scripture passages which speak to prominent Biblical themes—two themes (morning and evening) for each day of the year. Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is … And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! § The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. § The coming of the Lord is at hand … The Judge is standing at the door! § Surely I am coming quickly. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness?  He has prepared a city for them. 

Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? § I said in my haste, “I am cut off from before Your eyes”; nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications when I cried out to You. Shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. § Wait for the Lord, and He will save you. § Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. § See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.

 It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
