Christ in a believer's heart will act the same as He acted in Galilee and Judea. His disposition is the same now as then. He was holy, righteous, compassionate, meek and humble then, and He has not changed. He is the same wherever He is found, whether it be at the right hand of God or in the nature of a true disciple. He was friendly, loving, prayerful, kindly, worshipful, self-sacrificing while walking among men; is it not reasonable to expect Him to be the same when walking in men" Why then do true Christians sometimes act in an un-Christlike manner" Some would assume that when a professed Christian fails to show forth the moral beauty of Christ in his life it is a proof that he has been deceived and is actually not a real Christian at all. But the explanation is not so simple as that. The truth is that while Christ dwells in the believer's new nature, He has strong competition from the believer's old nature. The warfare between the old and the new goes on continually in most believers. This is accepted as inevitable, but the New Testament does not so teach. A prayerful study of Romans 6 to 8 points the way to victory. If Christ is allowed complete sway He will live in us as He lived in Galilee.

Tension Between the Old Nature and the New

WHAT a precious promise. How many of the Lord's people have been cheered and encouraged by it. Sin lives in us, works in us, fights in us, but it shall not reign. It may annoy, it shall not destroy. Its authority is destroyed by the Lord; its power is weakened by grace; it is warned to quit its old residence, and it will soon be ejected. We are not under the condemning power of the law, it is not our rule of justification, but we are under favour; God dealeth with us as with children. He pardons, pities, and delivers us. He will not allow sin to hold us in perpetual bondage, or to condemn us at the last day; but He will set us at liberty, and justify us fully. The flesh will lust against the Spirit, corruption will rise and fight; but we shall be strengthened, assisted, and counselled until we finally overcome. Grace shall reign through righteousness unto eternal life, by Jesus Christ our Lord. The law will be honoured in our endless blessedness, and Jesus will be glorified in us throughout eternity. By grace we are saved.On such love, my soul, still ponder, Love so great, so rich, so free! Say, while lost in holy wonder, Why, O Lord, such love to me Hallelujah, Grace shall reign eternally.

BELIEVERS are delivered from the law, and are dead to it; they are married to Christ, and are alive unto God as a God of love. The curse is removed, sin is atoned for, and we stand as high in the favour of God as we possibly can. We should look upon ourselves as the favourites of God, His beloved children, whom He hath reconciled to Himself by the death of His Son. Grace reigns over us, rules in us, provides for us, and will glorify us. Why then should we fear? Of whom should we be afraid? Sin is pardoned. The law is magnified. Justice is satisfied. God is at peace with us; yea, He delights in us. The world is overcome for us, and even Satan shall be bruised under our feet shortly. What shall we say to these things? As God is for us, and with us, who shall injure, or prevail against us? All things must work together for good; nothing shall be able to separate us from the love of God; we shall be more than conquerors through Him who loved us; and why? Because we are not under the law, but under grace. Because Jesus lives, we shall live also.On Jesus only I depend, He is my Father, God, and Friend, My Prophet, King, and Priest; Had I an angel's holiness, I'd cast aside that glorious dress, And wrap me up in Christ.

"Ye are under grace." Romans 6:14

"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace." Romans 6:14 Sin will reign if it can: it cannot be satisfied with any place below the throne of the heart. We sometimes fear that it will conquer us, and then we cry unto the LORD, "Let not any iniquity have dominion over me." This is His comforting answer: "Sin shall not have dominion over you." It may assail you and even wound you, but it shall never establish sovereignty over you. If we were under the law, our sin would gather strength and hold us under its power; for it is the punishment of sin that a man comes under the power of sin. As we are under the covenant of grace, we are secured against departing from the living God by the sure declaration of the covenant. Grace is promised to us by which we are restored from our wanderings, cleansed from our impurities, and set free from the chains of habit. We must lie down in despair and be "content to serve the Egyptians" if we were still as slaves working for eternal life; but since we are the LORD's free men, we take courage to fight with [our] temptations, being assured that sin shall never bring us under its sway again. God Himself giveth us the victory through our LORD Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

The LORD's Free Men

A most important declaration to him who has fled over the borders, and taken refuge in the kingdom of God. For sin is now hateful to him, and the idea of being made again to bow under its sceptre, intolerable. He is now in a novel region. Before, even all his days, sin had dominion over him, an undivided sway. He found out the cruelty of that dominion, and, trusting in a divine promise, dared to flee. He is now made aware that all the powers of darkness are irritated greatly, and are fierce in pursuit. They cry in his ear, that his flight has been in vain, and that he will soon be brought again under the dominion of sin. And at times also, it seems as though he were being dragged again to the dread dark region; that he will not be able to continue in God's marvellous light. Then he hears the delightful declaration that sin shall not have dominion over him; an assurance that gives him amazing strength, and enables him to slay more enemies than Samson did. Made partaker of the divine nature by this exceeding great and precious promise, he bids his foes observe that he is no longer the weak and helpless captive whom they once knew. They are amazed to see how their once-deadly darts are now turned aside by his shield; how their weapons are shivered against his breast-plate; and how the sword in his hand compels them to flee. " What! this slave a warrior? this captive a free man? this creature of our will, a defier of our sovereignty? - a scorner of us and our millions?" Even so. The prince of this world is cast out from a region where Christ and the followers of Christ have found a footing; a region whose limits must expand, till the god of this world has fought his last battle and sunk to his appropriate locality.

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! § My brethren, you … have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. § Not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ. § The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. § Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

Daily Light on the Daily Path or Daily Light is a Christian daily devotional scripture reading published by Bagster & Sons about 1875. It has been reprinted continually since then.
