For Reading and Meditation:      John 20:10-18Some non-Christian religions claim that God is the Author of their sacred writings as well as of the Bible, but the god they talk about is not the God who has revealed Himself in the Person of His Son. The true God is a Father - the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Mohammed wrote in the Qur'an (as we saw): "Allah forbid that He Himself should beget a Son." But that is exactly what God did - He begot a Son. What does "begotten" mean? C. S. Lewis in his book Mere Christianity points out that to beget is to become the father of; to create is to make. When you beget, you beget something of the same kind as yourself. A man begets human babies, a beaver begets little beavers, and a bird begets eggs which turn into baby birds. A man can create a statue which looks like a man but is not a real man. This is an important issue to get clear. What God begets is God, just as what man begets is man. That is why human beings are not sons of God in the sense that Christ is. They may be like God in certain ways, but they are not of the same kind. One of the creeds says that Christ is the Son of God, "begotten not created," and adds: "begotten by His Father before all worlds." "Before all worlds." Christ is begotten, not created. For what purpose? That you and I might have a Divine Father also. Gracious and loving God, from the bottom of my heart I want to thank You for begetting a Son in order that through Him I might come to know You as Father. I shall be grateful throughout time and all eternity. "Jesus said ... 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"v. 17) 

"And I give unto them Eternal Life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand." John 10:28 We believe in the eternal security of the saints. First, because they are Christ's, and He will never lose the sheep which He has bought with His blood and received of His Father. Next, because He gives them eternal life, and if it be eternal, well then, it is eternal, and there can be no end to hell, and heaven, and God. If spiritual life can die out, it is manifestly not eternal life, and that effectually shuts out the possibility of an end. Observe, further, that the LORD expressly says, "They shall never perish." As long as words have a meaning, this secures believers from perishing. The most obstinate unbelief cannot force this meaning out of this sentence. Then, to make the matter complete, He declares that His people are in His hand, and He defies all their enemies to pluck them out of it. Surely it is a thing impossible even for the fiend of hell. We must be safe in the grasp of an almighty Savior. Be it ours to dismiss carnal fear as well as carnal confidence and rest peacefully in the hollow of the Redeemer's hand.

The Safest Place

The Christian should never think or speak lightly of unbelief. For a child of God to mistrust his love, his truth, his faithfulness, must be greatly displeasing to him. How can we ever grieve him by doubting his upholding grace? Christian! it is contrary to every promise of God's precious Word that thou shouldst ever be forgotten or left to perish. If it could be so, how could he be true who has said, "Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I never forget thee." What were the value of that promise-"The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee." Where were the truth of Christ's words-"I give unto my sheep eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand." Where were the doctrines of grace? They would be all disproved if one child of God should perish. Where were the veracity of God, his honour, his power, his grace, his covenant, his oath, if any of those for whom Christ has died, and who have put their trust in him, should nevertheless be cast away? Banish those unbelieving fears which so dishonour God. Arise, shake thyself from the dust, and put on thy beautiful garments. Remember it is sinful to doubt his Word wherein he has promised thee that thou shalt never perish. Let the eternal life within thee express itself in confident rejoicing. Consider the speaker, the giver. Who is this shepherd? It is the Lord of Glory. All things were made not only by him, but for him..It is for all to yield the tribute of all they possess to him, and ever to ascribe unto him all glory and honor and wisdom and power. But lo! this Lord of all quits his throne, takes a shepherd's crook, and comes forth with a gift. Consider then on whom the gift is bestowed! As you ascended high to learn the dignity of the giver, so must you descend beyond expression deep to know the unworthiness of the beneficiaries. They are distinguished in creation by this mark, that they resolved, whatever angels in heaven or saints on earth might do, they would yield no tribute to the Lord of Hosts, no, not so much as a shoe latchet, and would arrogate to them selves glory, honor, wisdom and power. Hell yawned for them, exulting. But the injured Prince came nigh to them, veiling his glory that he might not irritate, donning the habiliments of a humble and a friendly shepherd. Consider the gift - eternal life. Not common life. Even common life is better than all material things. But a celestial life. Nay, a divine life. His own life. He breathed into them his own infinite spirit, and immediately they began to walk heavenward, in faith, love, joy, humility, peace, hope, dignity, and unspeakable blessedness. This life permeated all their being, reached their eyes, their lips, their hands, their feet, and made them what the seraphim in heaven are, servants of the most high God. Eternal life! Mighty mountains shall crumble beneath their feet, - they will ascend to higher; earth shall dissolve beneath them, - they will step into the heavens; the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, - they will mount up to the heaven of heavens; the stupendous cycles of the universe will revolve, - they will live on, crowned with garlands of never-fading youth, purity, wisdom, and delight.

When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then You knew my path. § He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold. § Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. § You have been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat.
