For Reading and Meditation:      Romans 11:1-24We continue reflecting on the meaning of grace. Illion T. Jones, a famous Welsh preacher, said that "The word 'grace' is unquestionably the most significant single word in the Bible." I agree. But it must be understood right away that grace is a characteristic of God which is exercized only toward those who are seen as having a special relationship with Him. Nowhere in the Bible is the grace of God ever mentioned in connection with humankind generally, though some theologians frequently use the term "common grace" (a term not mentioned in the Bible) - the idea that God gives a special form of grace to the whole of humankind which restrains them from being as bad as they could be. The other day I came across a writer who said: "The creation of the universe was an exercise of grace." I understand that he might have been using the word "grace" as a synonym for love (a mistake often made by Christian writers), but strictly speaking the exhibition of grace is reserved for the elect - those God foreknew would be brought into a special relationship with Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ. This is why we must distinguish "grace" from "mercy" or "goodness," for Scripture says: "The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all his works" (Psalm 145:9, NKJV). Arthur W. Pink says: "Grace is the sole source from which flows the goodwill, love and salvation of God into His chosen people." Grace cannot be bought, earned, deserved, or merited. If it could, it would cease to be grace. Grace flows down as pure charity, "falling on the unlovable and making it lovely." Amazing!Yes Father, it's truly amazing! That love should stoop down to me - an undeserving, even hell-deserving sinner - such an exhibition of grace is more than I can comprehend. But I receive it nevertheless. And because of it I am saved. For Reading and Meditation:      Romans 3:21-31Herbert Spencer, whom we quoted earlier, wrote: "The task of religion is at-one-ment: atonement. If it fails to do this it fails at the vital point." Its ritual may be beautiful, its sanctions may be ancient, its precepts may be good, but if it fails to bring men and women into correspondence with God it fails vitally and irretrievably. All else is useless, for if the problem of evil is ignored or passed over, we are like the person who dreams about and plans next year's happiness while an incurable disease is eating at his vitals. The wonderful distinctive of Christianity is this - Jesus Christ has done something about the problem of being out of correspondence with God. He puts the hand of a penitent sinner into the hand of a pardoning God. Because of the nature of the problem - the problem of evil - no other solution is possible. Salvation is a task which only God could engineer. As one theologian puts it: "It is a task worthy of God." The ancient Greek playwrights used to warn their students that when writing a tragedy they should not bring a god onto the stage unless there was an entanglement worthy of a god. The presence of evil in this world, I suggest, presents an entanglement worthy of God. But it is no mere stage affair. It is a tragic fact. To deliver men and women from evil was a problem that challenged God's power and made the deepest claim upon His love. The cross is the answer. If we don't take God's way of salvation, then nothing else will do. Father, I rejoice that You have brought me to Your way -t he only way. Help the millions who strive to earn their salvation see that the penalty for sin has been fully paid. And all they have to do is humbly receive. In Jesus' Name I pray. "God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood." (v. 25) 

IT was a solemn question which was proposed in the days of old, "How can man be just with God?" Man is without righteousness, he is chargeable with many crimes, he is brought in guilty, and condemned by God's holy law; and he has no excuse to make. His mouth is stopped. We feel this to be our situation by nature. But the Lord who is our Judge, hath devised a way by which He can be just, and yet justify us. It is by grace. He justifies, or acquits us from all charges, pronounces us righteous, accepts us, and introduces us into His favour, friendship, and fellowship, freely, without anything being done or suffered by us. He presents us with the work of Jesus, by which all our debts are paid; our righteousness is wrought out; the law and government of God are honoured; and a good title to eternal life is made out; we receive this work by faith, which He also bestows, and we are "justified from all things." Not one charge remains. There is no condemnation. But we are justified freely by grace without the works of the law.Slain in the guilty sinner's stead, Jesus, Thy righteousness I plead, And Thine atoning blood: That righteousness my robe shall be; Thy merit shall avail for me, And bring me near to God.

The grace of God is His favor and acceptance to those who do not deserve it; who, in fact, deserve the very opposite; but who trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.Four of the better known verses on grace are these! "The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ" (John 1:17). "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus" (Romans 3:24). "For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9). "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).Some extol God's grace as the chief of all His virtues. Samuel Davies, for instance, wrote:Great God of wonders! all Thy waysDisplay Thine attributes divine;But the bright glories of Thy graceAbove Thine other wonders shine:Who is a pard'ning God like Thee?Or who has grace so rich and free?But who can say that one of God's attributes is greater than another?God has always been a God of grace-in the Old Testament as well as in the New. We ask ourselves, "Why should He have chosen me? Why should the Lord Jesus have shed His life's blood for one so unworthy? Why should God not only save me from hell, but bless me with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies now, and destine me to spend eternity with Him in heaven?" No wonder we sing of the amazing grace that saved such wretches!Then, too, God wants His grace to be reproduced in our own lives and to flow through us to others. He wants us to be gracious in our dealings with others. Our speech should be always with grace, seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6). We should impoverish ourselves that others might be enriched (2 Corinthians 8:9). We should grant favor and acceptance to the unworthy and the unlovely.

"The God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus…" (1 Peter 5:10)

James does not say that the man in today's verse has faith. The man himself says he has faith, but if he really had saving faith, he would have works also. His faith is a matter of words only, and that kind of faith cannot save anyone. Words without works are dead.Salvation is not by works. Neither is it by faith plus works. Rather it is by the kind of faith that results in good works.Why then does James say in verse 24 that a man is justified by works? Isn't this a flat contradiction of Paul's teaching that we are justified by faith? Actually there is no contradiction. Both are true. The fact is that there are six different aspects of justification in the New Testament, as follows:We are justified by God (Romans 8:33) - He is the One who reckons us righteous.We are justified by grace (Romans 3:24) - God gives us justification as a free, undeserved gift.We are justified by faith (Romans 5:1) - we receive this gift by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ.We are justified by blood (Romans 5:9) - the precious blood of Christ is the price that was paid for our justification.We are justified by power (Romans 4:25) - the power that raised Jesus our Lord from the dead is the power that makes our justification possible.We are justified by works (James 2:24) - good works are the outward evidence to all that we have been truly justified.It is not enough to testify to a conversion experience. We must demonstrate it by the good works that inevitably follow the new birth.Faith is invisible. It is an unseen transaction that takes place between the soul and God. People cannot see our faith. But they can see the good works that are the fruit of saving faith. They have reason to doubt our faith until they see the works.Abraham's good work was his willingness to slay his son as an offering to God (James 2:21). Rahab's good work was betraying her country (James 2:25). The reason they were "good" works is because they demonstrated faith in Jehovah. Otherwise they would have been bad works, namely, murder and treason.The body separated from the spirit is dead. That's what death is - the separation of the spirit from the body. So faith without works is dead also. It is lifeless, powerless and inoperative.A living body demonstrates that an invisible spirit dwells within. So good works are the sure sign that there is saving faith, invisible as it is, dwelling within the person.

"What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?." (James 2:14)

The way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest. § Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh … let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. § Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Christ Jesus, whom God set forth to be a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed. § Through Him we … have access by one Spirit to the Father.

Daily Light on the Daily Path or Daily Light is a Christian daily devotional scripture reading published by Bagster & Sons about 1875. It has been reprinted continually since then. Him who judges righteously. § We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. § Each of us shall give account of himself to God. § The soul who sins shall die. “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, against the Man who is My Companion,” says the Lord of hosts. “Strike the Shepherd.” § The Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. § Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed. § Mercy triumphs over judgment. § The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. A just God and a Savior; there is none besides Me. § Just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

 A God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He. 

I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil. § “There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.” In Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace. It pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself … having made peace through the blood of His cross. § Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness … over the sins that were previously committed … that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. § If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
