The Lord is my helper. - Hebrews 13:6

"So that we may boldly say, The LORD is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." Hebrews 13:6 Because God will never leave nor forsake us, we may well be content with such things as we have. Since the LORD is ours, we cannot be left without a friend, a treasure, and a dwelling place. This assurance may make us feel quite independent of men. Under such high patronage we do not feel tempted to cringe before our fellowmen and ask of them permission to call our lives our own; but what we say we boldly say and defy contradiction. He who fears God has nothing else to fear. We should stand in such awe of the living LORD that all the threats that can be used by the proudest persecutor should have no more effect upon us than the whistling of the wind. Man in these days cannot do so much against us as he could when the apostle wrote the verse at the head of this page. Racks and stakes are out of fashion. Giant Pope cannot burn the pilgrims now. If the followers of false teachers try cruel mockery and scorn, we do not wonder at it, for the men of this world cannot love the heavenly seed. What then? We must bear the world's scorn. It breaks no bones. God helping us, let us be bold; and when the world rages, let it rage, but let us not fear it.

Fear Only God

Here we have an admirable expression of Christian confidence. It is pure confidence in God, viewed as the source not only of one's own strength, but of all strength, so that there remains nothing in the world worthy to excite alarm. " The Lord is my helper," saith the believer. " I am not counting upon some future alliance with him; but speak from a deep and satisfying experience of his presence and faithfulness. I have been shorn of all my former conceit of strength; and have hearkened to the proposal of the Infinite One, a proposal to be unto me strength, wisdom, righteousness. On the day that I became bankrupt, I entered into the possession of all riches." If the Lord be thy helper, and if all the power of man is inferior to that which accompanies thee, then why dost thou not do some great, some world-surprising thing? Thou hast no occasion to fear aught that man may attempt. To all the waves of hostility thou art able to say, " Thus far shall ye come and no farther." Ride now victoriously through the earth and establish thy beneficent dominion throughout all lands, giving men relief from the oppressions under which they have languished for so many ages. A similar suggestion was once made to the Lord Jesus Christ. Had he been willing to set aside the will of God, and to put himself under the guidance of that evil spirit of expediency that rules in the counsels of the princes of this world, had he accommodated himself to the expectations of the Jews and presented himself as a temporal and political Messiah, all the kingdoms of the world might have been his, but he would have been simply the vicegerent of the God of this world. Daily Light on the Daily Path or Daily Light is a Christian daily devotional scripture reading published by Bagster & Sons about 1875. It has been reprinted continually since then.  My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. 

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him! Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. § None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy. § I will speak of Your testimonies … before kings, and will not be ashamed.

 I will not fear. What can man do to me? 

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; the God of my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; my Savior. § The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song I will praise Him. When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him. § We may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever. § Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.  God is my defense. 

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. § You did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” I did not say to the seed of Jacob, “Seek Me in vain.” § Therefore … having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. § We may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 

He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” § I will go in the strength of the Lord God; I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only. The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness, and assurance forever. Stand …, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness… For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. § The Lord is with you! Go in this might of yours.
