Moses took us back to the beginning of all that we see, all that we call the universe. He took us back before the stars and moon were, before space was and before time was, and said, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). So Moses said that the One who calls us to Himself has a right to do so because He antedates time, He transcends space, He fills His universe and He is God. . . . David, in Psalms 103, showed that this God is not only a God who makes mountains, hills, rivers and streams, who rides upon the wings of the clouds, but He loves His people. "For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him" (v. 11). "But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children--with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts" (vv. 17-18). David tried to impart the incommunicable, tried to tell what cannot be told of the wonder of God.

The Wonder of God

God's ability to forget sins that have been covered by the blood of Christ is one of the most soul-satisfying truths in Scripture.It is a great wonder when we read, "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us" (Psalms 103:12). It is a marvel that we can say with Hezekiah, "Thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back" (Isaiah 38:17). It boggles the mind when we hear the Lord saying, "I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins" (Isaiah 44:22). But it is even more wonderful when we read, "I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more" (Jeremiah 31:34).When we confess our sins, He not only forgives, He forgets instantly. We are not stretching the truth when we say that He immediately buries our sins in the sea of His forgetfulness. This is illustrated by the experience of a believer who was having a ding-dong struggle with a besetting sin. In a moment of weakness, he gave in to the temptation. Rushing into the presence of the Lord, he blurted out, "Lord, I've done it again." Then he thought he heard the Lord saying, "What have you done again?" The point, of course, is that in that split second following confession, God had already forgotten.This is a delightful paradox-that the omniscient God can forget. On the one hand He knows everything. He counts the stars and names each one. He numbers our tossings and keeps count of our tears. He marks the sparrow's fall. He numbers the hairs of our head. And yet He forgets those sins that have been confessed and forsaken. David Seamands said, "I don't know how divine omniscience can forget but I know it does."There is one final point! It has been well said that when God forgives and forgets, He puts up a sign reading "No fishing." It is forbidden for me to fish up my own past sins or the sins of others that God has forgotten. In this respect we must have a poor memory and a good forgettery.

Among those who read the Bible, how small a proportion, what an insignificant minority are the broken and contrite in heart! How rare a thing it is to see a man who is bowed down beneath a sense of his sinfulness, and who finds it difficult to conceive that there should ever be pardon for him! How small the number of such! Now see what honor God has put upon these few. A great deal of his word seems to be intended just for them. God, so to speak, passes by the crowds of those who are comfortable in spirit and have an easy faith in the mercy of God, to come to some poor faltering sinner and convince him of the freeness and unmeasured fulness of divine mercy. You and I must often see that the word of God is not troubling itself about us, but about some deeply-convicted, hesitating, trembling soul.

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. He will not always strive with us, nor will He keep His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. You received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. § You who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ … Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.
